Sensitive Position No Job Description Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) is a member of the Virginia Community College System and is located in historic Abingdon, Virginia. Abingdon is located in southwest Virginia, halfway between Roanoke, Virginia and Knoxville, Tennessee on Interstate 81, part of a metro area of 600,000. VHCC is accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges and serves the City of Bristol, Virginia; Washington County, Virginia; and the western portion of Smyth County, Virginia. The college offers comprehensive instruction to more than 3,000 students in occupational-technical areas, college transfer programs, continuing education, developmental education, general education and specialized regional and community service areas. Rank and salary dependent on academic credentials and work experience. This is a full-time twelve-month teaching position. Reappointment will be based on performance evaluations and institutional needs . Position Responsibilities: Teach day, evening, seated, hybrid, and/or virtual English courses; Actively employ effective student success strategies; Integrate instructional technology in courses and the curriculum as appropriate; Develop new courses as necessary; Establish and assess student outcomes and participate in Institutional Effectiveness initiatives to include assessment and program reviews; Manage the Moose Academic Resource Center (MARC); Develop a VHCC Writing Center within the MARC; Supervise a small team of part-time tutors; Maintain detailed records of tutoring activities; Interact with faculty and staff to build tutoring opportunities that support VHCC students; Manage the operating budget for the academic resource center; Record and report data needed for grant funding; Provide leadership and service on college committees; Advance the college mission by involvement in college, community and professional activities that enhances the college and impact student development; Teach other courses matching qualifications and perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required Qualifications Master’s degree in English from a regionally accredited institution; Expressed willingness to develop and teach courses in-person and via distance learning; Experience teaching community college English courses; Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty & staff and other stakeholders important to the college; Experience using learning management systems; Experience leading a tutoring or student support services program. Additional Considerations Experience using an array of instructional technologies; Experience hiring, scheduling, and supervising tutors; Demonstrated knowledge of reporting requirements related to grant funded services such as the Excel program; Experience promoting or utilizing tutoring programs on a community college campus and work closely with faculty to schedule services and events; Experience building or collaborating with a community college writing center.
