GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Public Information Specialist assists with functions of the Public Information Office which include internal and external communications. Creates content for Roanoke County’s online presence, utilizing verbal, written and visual communications. Assists with media relations activities. Collaborates with the Public Information Officer to assist County Administration, the Board of Supervisors, and departments with additional communications support. Provides excellent oral and written communications. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Responsible for reaching stakeholders utilizing various communications platforms, including the County’s social media channels, website, blog, vlog, podcast, video content, and photography. Responsible for creating content for the County’s communications platforms to promote the work of Roanoke County government and showcase its vibrant community. Collaborates with departments to source content for the various communications platforms. Conducts on-camera interviews with staff and external partners to create content for the County’s communications platforms. Hosts the County’s monthly podcast, sourcing content and securing guests. Works with Roanoke Valley Television (RVTV-3), the County’s government access television station, to produce the podcast, vlogs, videos, and public service announcements that promote Roanoke County. Develops various social media campaigns around ongoing County projects and needs. Develops content for internal and external publications, materials, and presentations. Understands and promotes the County's branding strategy. Researches, prepares, and writes news releases, official statements, scripts, speeches, and other materials that describe the work of Roanoke County. Interacts with media representatives and coordinates interviews with staff. Assists with copy editing, development of presentations, and photography. Supports County events, including press conferences and ribbon cuttings. Provides support for specific requests made by County Administration and the Board of Supervisors. Assists with planning, execution, and coordination for various County initiatives, such as citizen surveys, special events, and projects. Monitors the media for stories involving Roanoke County. Supports community engagement activities. Works with departments to research and prepare submissions for awards programs. Serves as an alternate to manage portions of the County’s website. Performs other related duties. REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES Education Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public relations, communications, journalism, or related field, and 2-3 years of work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience Required: Strong written, oral, and visual communications skills. Knowledgeable on all key social platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube, as well as informed about new and emerging platforms. Preferred: Experience with blogs, vlogs, and podcasting. On-camera interviews or on-camera experience. Producing a variety of social media content. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of principles and practices related to communications and public information. Demonstrated communication, writing, and editing skills. Understanding of effective video content, graphic design, photography, visual communication, and social media. Understanding of organizational branding. Has a positive and professional attitude with citizens, employees, and elected officials. Ability to project a positive and professional image of Roanoke County. Understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is a plus. Experience with website development is a plus. Good analytical and problem-solving abilities. Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills, multi-tasking, and prioritizing tasks. Ability to work either with a team or alone. Self-motivated, personable, and keen attention to detail. May be necessary to work after normal business hours for meetings, or in the event of a departmental or County-wide emergency.
