Job Title: Resident Aide Department: Nursing Work Schedule: This position reports to work ready for routine duties and emergencies, and may include working varied shifts, non-standard day shift hours, and on-call duty, unless other qualified personnel are available and pre-assignment is made. This position is subject to call- back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.). Work Environment · Except where appropriate and conducive to accomplishing the goals and objectives of a particular task (such as monitoring a sleeping resident), this position will work in a well- lighted area that is ventilated and as physically and physiologically harmless as possible under the conditions which exist at a particular time. · Because the essential functions of this position often require caring for resident’s bodily functions and expose employees to infectious waste, diseases, odors, and other situations associated with health care, including but not limited to exposure to AIDS, HIV, and hepatitis B viruses involving Risk Classification Categories 1, 2, and 3, environmental conditions will fluctuate. · Universal Precaution Risk Classification Categories: 1. Tasks may involve exposure to blood or body fluids. 2. Tasks do not involve contact with blood or body fluids, but could result in performing a Category I task. 3. Tasks do not involve any risk of exposure to blood and body fluids. · To be qualified for this position, applicants and employees will have the ability to work in the environment conducive to caring for residents, with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to self or others. Work Attire · The position will meet the dress code of the facility, which includes neatness, cleanliness, grooming and dress, as specified in the personnel handbook and facility policy. Physical Requirements The facility has determined the essential functions of this job routinely requires ample strength and ability to stoop over, bend, and lift materials to successfully complete work assignments without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of him/her, including residents, co-workers, and others. Minimum Education · It is preferred that the Courtesy Aide will have a minimum of a high school diploma or completed a GED program. Minimum Work Experience · The facility prefers that all employees have prior health care experience and be knowledgeable of the essential job functions they will be performing. · It is preferred that employees have a minimum of six months of long-term care experience. Administrative Functions Essential Functions · Routinely review work assignments and schedules to update or change task objectives. · Perform assigned tasks in accordance with facility policies and procedures, as instructed by supervisor. · Notify the Charge Nurse of pending absence or tardiness within the time frame described in the personnel handbook. · Report to supervisor all complaints and grievances made by residents, families, visiting individuals, agencies, etc. · Meet with nursing personnel as scheduled to assist in identifying and correcting problems and/or the improvement of services. · Make unoccupied beds and change bed linens. · Wash hands before and after performing services. · Immediately report any communicable or infectious disease that you contract. · Observe, monitor and intervene for availability, and “reach ability” of bedside call signal, as well as cleanliness of residents’ water pitchers, drinking glasses, straws, and other bedside items. · Clean used equipment. · Assist and direct visitors as appropriate. · Help create an atmosphere of optimism, warmth, and interest in resident’s personal and health care needs. · Communicate with co-workers at all levels to adequately meet the needs of residents. · Participate in facility committees and audits, as needed. · Maintain confidentiality of all resident information and facility business. · Report to supervisor all complaints and grievances made by residents, families, visiting individuals, agencies, etc. · Attend work and report in a timely manner for scheduled shifts. · Notify supervisor of pending absence or tardiness within the time frame described in the personnel handbook. · Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or administrator. Staff Development Essential Functions · Attend in-service classes to maintain current licensure/certification, if applicable. Safety Essential Functions · Follow established safety precautions and observe, monitor and intervene or report unsafe conditions in the facility, including but not limited to the following: o Personnel – body mechanics § Lifting § Bending § Stooping § Reaching § Twisting § Other positions · Follow established smoking regulations and report violations. · Follow established policies and procedures in regard to disaster preparedness.
