Position Summary
In the field, the incumbent will collect, identify, and record stink bugs at field sites using plant scouting and trapping techniques in crop and known and/or potential non-crop host plants. The incumbent will also be conducting field tests to the examine best methodologies for trapping live stink bugs in various agricultural habitats. In the laboratory, the incumbent will assess parasitism of collected stink bug egg masses and adults. This individual will also perform molecular gut content analysis, including DNA extraction and PCR , for field-collected stink bugs using specialized equipment. Tests will also be performed in the lab with stink bugs previously collected for protein marking field tests using specialized equipment.

• Skill in performing molecular gut content analysis, DNA extraction, and PCR in the lab.
• Ability to identify insects, especially insect predators.
• Skill in using various techniques for collecting insects in the field.
• Ability to design experiments.

• Ability to analyze data using SAS , R, or other statistical programs.

Stink Bug Research
• The incumbent will independently manage the extraction of DNA from the contents of stink bug guts dissected from adult stink bugs DNA using a Quiagen DNEasy blood and tissue kit; then amplify the DNA in the extract using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) methodology with specific chemicals and specialized equipment.
• Collect, identify, and record data on stink bug egg masses, nymphs, and adults in hosts plants in the field using direct plant sampling and stink bug pheromone-baited traps.
• Perform immunoassays as indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays ( ELISA ) using specific chemicals and specialized equipment to detect for the presence of egg white protein on field-collected stink bugs and leaf discs.
• Hold field-collected egg masses retrieved from the field in an environmental chamber until parasitoid emergence. Afterwards, complete assessment of parasitism of each egg mass by examining each individual egg in a mass for parasitism.
