Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

*Computer skills to include: Windows, Microsoft office, electronic medical record ( EMR ) and laboratory information systems ( LIS ) and faxing
*Knowledge of insurance relationship to laboratory testing and medical office practices
Position Summary
The Lab Clerk/Phlebotomist is responsible for carrying out laboratory procedures involving the collection, handling, and processing of human laboratory specimens. They also handle incoming telephone calls, providing answers to queries or directing calls to the appropriate personnel. They consult with Technologists for clinical direction, receive patients, and prioritize/manage workflow at the reception desk. Additionally, they perform data entry using information systems, ensure the upkeep of office and medical supplies, and follow detailed instructions using established methods and procedures. This position may perform designated waived testing as trained with oversight from the Technologist.

* Clinical Laboratory skills appropriate to perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing.
* Understanding of age specific and cultural needs of UHC student patients and providers.
* Competent in laboratory information systems, inventory and human resource management.
* Skilled in critical thinking, prioritizing, organization, communication across levels of understanding and privacy/confidentiality.

Phlebotomy:
* Uses 2 types patient identifiers to ensure accurate patient identification and sample labeling.
* Performs venous blood collection using various techniques: syringe, vacutainer, butterfly, capillary collection, blood culture collection.
* Successfully performs venipuncture without injury, missing only the most difficult patients.
* Evaluates patient anxiety prior to phlebotomy and offers coping techniques and instruction.
* Able to identify adverse reactions and acquires assistance.

Laboratory Clerk:
* Handles phone calls in a helpful and courteous manner, expeditiously determines need, gives information or forwards caller to appropriate person.
* Greets patients in a helpful and courteous manner, organizes and directs patient/specimen flow.
* Verifies identification of patients and specimens by using 2 identifiers.
* Receives specimens or initiates specimen collection.
* Manages efficient, prompt distribution of specimens to the appropriate testing area using standard precautions.
* Reviews in-coming orders for appropriateness.
* Receives and accessions laboratory specimens using electronic systems with accuracy and efficiency.
* Communicates patient preparation needs and specimen requirements.
* Gives accurate and precise instructions to patients for specimen collection.
* Prioritizes tasks for technologists.
* Manages simultaneous demands effectively.

* Follows specimen identification requirements, quality control and procedure details.
