Job Title: Girls on the Run of Central VA Program Director
Location: Roanoke, VA Reports To: Executive Director
FLSA Status : Full-time, Non - Exempt
Girls on the Run International is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Over 210 Councils in 50 states serve 200,000+ girls a year, and engage 100,000+ volunteers.

We strive to eliminate barriers to participation, to continue creating programming that engages all communities, to be intentional about staff and volunteer diversity and to promote a culture of inclusion across the organization.
Position Profile
The Girls on the Run® Program Director must possess a passion for and commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of girls in third through eighth grades. The Girls on the Run program provides a safe and interactive way to learn about healthy living, which includes an introduction and education on important topics such as goal setting, cooperation, healthy decision-making, and self-respect, while training for a 5K event. The innovative curriculum teaches girls to listen and open up while also encouraging them to commit to a healthy lifestyle, and harness the inner strength that they possess.
Our important mission is accomplished by giving girls the tools to make positive choices for a healthy body and mind, while reducing the many risks they face today.
The Program Director reports to the Girls on the Run Executive Director. The Program Director is responsible for managing all of the Girls on the Run programs and volunteers in the West Region, consisting of the cities Roanoke, Salem and Radford and the counties of Roanoke, Botetourt, Franklin and Montgomery counties. Some of the key responsibilities falling within these areas include:
Program Outreach
• Implement the Girls on the Run strategic program plan and achieve program goals with respect to number of girls, number of sites and demographic requirements
• Market Girls on the Run program to potential new sites and schools
• Work with community leaders, schools and regional groups to maximize Girls on the Run success
• Establish and foster community partnerships with like-minded organizations that are aligned with the Girls on the Run mission
Coach Management and Training
• Recruit volunteer coaches from the community and within schools
• Manage all aspects of coach training, including Girls on the Run training, CPR & First Aid, and background checks
• Facilitate meetings with coaches during the season
• Enforce all current coaching policies and procedures and generate continuous improvement
• Support coaches throughout the season through consistent communication and site visits
Site Management
• Coordinate logistics for all new and existing sites in the West Region and enforce site policies and procedures
• Support teams in the girl recruitment process through social media efforts, tabling, and marketing materials
• Oversee the registration of participants and manage scholarship applications
• Facilitate the necessary agreements, paperwork, and insurance between partnership sites
Curriculum/Equipment Management
• Distribute and organize all curriculum materials including coach and team supplies
• Manage inventory of program curriculum
5K Coordinator
• Plan and execute a 500+ person event working with local hosts
• Develop safety plans for attendees
• Recruit and manage race volunteers
• Market 5K event to Greater Roanoke community
• Coordinate and supervise race day set up, race day sponsors and volunteers, runner refreshments and post-race meetings.
Budget and Administrative
• Work with Executive Director to develop relationships with funders and community partners
• Meet with the Executive Director on a regular basis (no less than monthly) to discuss goals and actions, both past and upcoming.
• Meet with the GOTR team on a weekly basis in person or virtually to create, plan and/or adjust goals and objectives.
• Communicate with coaches, volunteers and families, to include e-newsletters, fliers, recruitment materials, social media management and outreach.
• Organize GOTR awareness events and fundraising opportunities
• Solicit sponsors and in kind donations to support the program and 5K
• Explore Grant opportunities and work with the Executive Director on local grants
• Lead area board meetings every other month
• Data collection & information management of rosters, girls, numbers & revenue
• Manage all coach files, sites files and other program related paperwork
Required Qualifications
• BA or BS degree
• Passion for Girls on the Run mission and the ability to comprehend and effectively communicate issues surrounding empowerment, self-esteem, body image and whole-person health
• Experience as a GOTR and/or H & S Coach (this can be acquired during the first season of employment)
• Outstanding communication skills in multiple environments and with a range of audiences (internal and external)
• Ability to be self-directed/motivated to work independently and can prioritize and make efficient decisions
• Able to work remotely with weekly virtual meetings with the home office, make regular visits to schools/ sites, and the willingness to make regular visits to Lynchburg
• Flexible and adaptable work hours that require occasional evenings and weekends
• Reliable transportation to make on site visits throughout the assigned territory.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with Girls on the Run (or other similar youth or wellness programs)
• Non-profit management experience
• Fundraising experience
• Experience working with data management platforms
• Experience working with a Board of Directors
• Connections to the local community
This is a full-time, non-exempt position, offering compensation of a starting salary of $31,000, depending on experience.
The Girls on the Run/Heart & Sole programs occur in the afternoon immediately upon school dismissal, so afternoons are critical. Most work takes place Mon-Fri, but some weekends and evenings for special events are required. These events may include, but not be limited to Coach Training Seminars, Coach meetings, 5K Events and special promotional events.
