The Division of Student Affairs consists of over 300 employees within five units - the Office of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer and the Dean of Students, Student Health and Wellness , University Career Center , Office of African-American Affairs , and Housing & Residence Life and several units reporting to the Dean of Students - all working together, for and alongside students, to create the distinctive student experience for which UVA is known. This position is a full-time, twelve-month University Managerial and Professional Staff position with benefits . This is a four-year, term-limited position. The position may be eligible for renewal for additional years pending need and funding . The Assistant Director of Military-Affiliated Student Support is a key role within Student Affairs at the University of Virginia, dedicated to providing comprehensive support and guidance to military-affiliated students. This position focuses on enhancing the university experience for military service members, veterans, and their families, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that enables their academic and personal success. Key Responsibilities: Program Development and Implementation Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and initiatives to support military-affiliated students, including veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and their dependents. Collaborate with university departments to develop a cohesive network of support for military-affiliated students and to ensure the seamless integration of this network into the broader university community. Plan in partnership with University stakeholders and students signature programs that celebrate, recognize, and/or support military-affiliated students, to include annual Welcome Reception, Veterans Day and Graduation Celebration. Maintain facility oversight and management of Veterans Student Center. Coordinate any specific military-affiliated student orientation in partnership with Orientation & New Student Programs. Manage all event details including communication, venues, presenters, materials, refreshments, and technology, making sure all are arranged and completed in an appropriate and timely manner. Partner with Marketing and Communications Team to ensure that all advertising and marketing materials accurately represent programs. Manage development and maintenance of evaluation processes including associated metrics and key performance indicators along with the Divisional data research team. Manage programmatic budget resources and documentation appropriately. Student Advocacy and Support Responsibilities Serve as a primary point of contact and advocate for military-affiliated students and student organizations, addressing their unique needs, concerns, and challenges. Assist students in problem-solving and respond appropriately to challenges and/or crises, with particular attention to our non-traditionally aged students and support for their unique family-related concerns. Provide guidance on university policies, procedures, and available resources, ensuring a smooth transition into academic and University life. Establish and maintain good working relationships and collaborations with military-affiliated students. Serve as a resource to stakeholders such as alumni, community, and parents/families. Serve as a Posse mentor for one or more veteran Posse groups. Attend military-affiliated student functions and campus events, as appropriate, to maintain a visible and supportive staff presence. Community Engagement : Foster a sense of belonging and community among military-affiliated students through regular meetings, workshops, and events that encourage networking and peer support in collaboration with the Student Veterans of America, ROTC, and other military affiliated student groups. Establish and maintain relationships with military organizations, community partners, veteran service agencies, and support services; join relevant professional organizations that support military-affiliated students. Resource Coordination Collaborate closely with the University Registrar’s office to ensure accurate and efficient processing of military-related academic paperwork, certifications, and enrollment verifications. Partner with Student Financial Services to assist military students with financial aid inquiries, scholarships, grants, and other related financial matters. Collaborate with the Office of Admission in the development of strategies to recruit military-affiliated undergraduate students and ensure them a seamless transition as they matriculate to the University of Virginia. Collaborate with admission staff in the graduate and professional schools to support recruitment of military-affiliated graduate students. Establish working relationships with academic advising units in each School in order to refer students when necessary. Coordinate with university departments and Department of Veteran Affairs to ensure military-affiliated students have access to academic advising, mental health services, and other essential resources. Develop and implement effective communication strategies to inform military-affiliated students about support services, resources, and upcoming events. Utilize various communication channels, including email, social media, and the University website. Work collaboratively with University partners and student veterans to identify and eliminate systems and processes that serve barriers for Veteran admission, retention and graduation. Data Management and Assessment Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Research and Analytics to maintain accurate records and data related to military-affiliated students, including enrollment, academic progress, and student satisfaction. Collect and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of support programs and initiatives and use findings to make data-driven improvements in partnership with the Divisional data researchers. Minimum Requirements: Education: Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., counseling, student affairs, social work, or a related discipline). Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience required, additional experience can substitute for Master's requirement; experience working directly with military-affiliated students or a similar population is highly preferred. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in a relevant field. Military service experience or direct experience working within military support organizations. Knowledge of military culture, policies, and educational benefits. Familiarity with the University of Virginia system and its support services or with work in a comparably decentralized university environment. Details and Application Process The anticipated hiring range for this position is $55,000.00 to $65,000.00 and is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is an exempt-level position with UVa benefits.
