Job Description – PAYROLL ACCOUNTANT
SUMMARY: This role is a vital part of the accounting team and supports the Accounting Manager in a wide variety of payroll and benefits management activities. This is a hands-on position that is involved with weekly payroll for approximately 250 employees.  The PA will be responsible for assuring accuracy of all payroll data and will reconcile reports and oversee the payment of payroll liabilities.  The PA will also be responsible for monthly, quarterly and year-end reporting, reconciling GL accounts for accuracy as well as supporting year-end audits as required by external auditors.
This is an ideal position for an Accountant who has strong Excel skills, familiarity with ERP financial software and a strong desire to expand their corporate accounting knowledge.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Payroll Accountant works as part of the accounting team with responsibilities connected to the full payroll cycle including but not limited to:
• Weekly payroll accounting activities including timesheets, certified payrolls, benefits, per diems, garnishments, federal and multi-state tax requirements, worker’s compensation and unemployment insurance.
• Maintaining employee databases related to payroll, benefits, taxes and all liabilities, local, state and federal.  Remitting regular payments.
• Weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual returns and reporting requirements.  Participates in annual renewals for employee benefit programs and communicates with the employee group.
• Investigates and resolves issues and errors affecting payroll records, AP and GL ledgers utilizing Excel spreadsheets.
• Reconciles to balance sheet accounts, including but not limited to payroll liability accounts and certain vendor accounts.
• “Ad hoc” projects as assigned by the Accounting Manager.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Expert level skills processing payroll and administering employee benefits; minimum 10 years’ experience.
• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting or similar discipline.
• Knowledge of accounting principles, financial statements, AP, AR, and reconciliations.
• Experience working with a variety of accounting software programs.
• Intermediate level Excel skills. Intermediate level skills with other Microsoft applications.
• Strong problem-solving skills with critical thinking ability to not just identify issues but bring them to resolution.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
• Strong teamwork approach with the ability to adapt to changing priorities with a willingness to go above and beyond in service to the team.
• Highly organized, self-starter and process-oriented with an excellent attention to detail.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience working as a general or staff accountant.
• Candidates must be willing and able to pass a background check and drug screen.
