Thank you for considering a career at Mercy HealthEMG/Neuro TechThe Neurodiagnostic Technician is responsible for conducting patient testing including, but not limited to, EMG’s, electroencephalograms (EEG), nerve conduction studies, (NCS) and electronystagmograms (ENG). Responsibilities include maintaining timely completion of daily patient testing, accurate documentation of patient testing, and physical maintenance of clinical testing equipment.. The incumbent performs all assigned duties in strict compliance with established policies, procedures and protocols, and always works to ensure patient safety, comfort and privacy.Schedules requests for procedures. Obtains appropriate supplies prior to test. Reviews and analyzes patients' medical history to determine appropriate neurodiagnostic and ultrasound procedures. Interviews patients and/or family members to obtain additional information.The Neurodiagnostic Technician is responsible for conducting patient testing including, but not limited to, EMG’s, electroencephalograms (EEG), nerve conduction studies, (NCS) and electronystagmograms (ENG). Responsibilities include maintaining timely completion of daily patient testing, accurate documentation of patient testing, and physical maintenance of clinical testing equipment.. The incumbent performs all assigned duties in strict compliance with established policies, procedures and protocols, and always works to ensure patient safety, comfort and privacy.Explains procedures to reduce apprehension, allay fears, and elicit cooperation; prepares and positions patients for testing to include measuring and marking cranial area and fastening electrodes to specified position on scalp and body. Instructs patients in relaxation techniques, and elicits cooperation. Demonstrates sensitivity to patient’s needs; treats patients with skill, dignity, tact, and patience at all times. Selects appropriate testing procedure or montage as per patient diagnosis or physician preference.Delivers on our Promise by always demonstrating excellent patient experience behaviors. Conveys compassion and respect for the patient/customer and co-worker. Consistently delivers the nursing 5 must haves to include: purposeful hourly rounding, using whiteboard as tool for patient communication, bedside shift report/handoff , "M" in the box - explanation about medication, no pass zone rule and AIDET. Consistent utilizes the other Mercy Health customer experience tools including 5 Foot/10 Foot rule, iCare and Caring Out Loud. (Note: Failure to perform satisfactorily in this essential function will block incumbent from a satisfactory performance evaluation rating.)Independently performs all neurodiagnostic procedures such as routine and complex Electroencephalograph (EEG), ambulatory (24hr) EEG, Nerve Conduction studies, Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential, Visual Evoked Potential, Upper Somatosensory Evoked Potential, and Lower Somatosensory Evoked Potential, TCD. Sets up, operates electromyographic equipment to assist Neurologist in testing electrical activity of muscles (EMG) and measuring the conducting function of nerves (NCS), measure brainwave characteristics and measure blood flow through the carotid arteries and vessels in the brain. Adjusts, monitors, records frequencies and flows and records filters and sensitivity levels to optimize test results.Responsible for the final disposition of interpreted test results. Uses the Department’s database to effectively process testing data to report form and stores digital data to the optical disc. Transcribes dictated interpretations into report format and insures that inpatient results are posted to the patient’s chart in a timely fashion. Scans the results into HIS system so that they are available to the physician and medical records when department is closed. Enters appropriate charges in HIS and keeps records of all units of service for statistical reporting.Prepares test results for interpretation by physician, recording necessary information such as voltages, latencies, frequencies, and conduction times on graphs, identifying tests performed and unusual occurrences. Eliminates all artifacts for consideration caused by equipment. Cleans, calibrates, troubleshoots and maintains diagnostic equipment. Refers difficult and non-routine equipment problems to Clinical Biomedical services. Recognizes unsafe conditions that may jeopardize patient safety. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.Assures proper handling of all written correspondence, physician orders, and/or electronic mail. When appropriate, customer concerns, requests, billing questions, or general inquiries are addressed or resolved personally and not forwarded. Consistently keeps in confidence all matters related to the patient or organization. Insures management is advised of all unusual, significant encounters.Must maintain continuing education requirements of ABRET for REEGT credentials. Be active in the pursuit of professional growth and development via educational opportunities to keep up with latest accepted practices. Develops and reviews operational policies and procedures according to established standards of practice. MINIMUM EDUCATIONRequired Minimum Education: High School or GEDPreferred Education: 2 year degreeSpecialty/Major: Electroneurodiagnostics TechnologySecondary education and experience will be considered in lieu of degree.LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS (must be non-expired/active unless otherwise stated):Required: Candidate must be certified through ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation or must be certified within one year of hire.Preferred: CPR or BCLS certification within 30 days of hire, R.EEG or CNCT certification through ABEM( Certified Nerve conductionSpecialtyMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSMinimum Years and Type of Experience: Recent experience in EMG and ENG in addition to EEG preferred but not required. Will accept candidates without an Associated degree if certified in one of the modalitiesOther Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Spelling, basic knowledge of anatomy (muscles, nerves, vestibular system, visual system) ; average mathematical skills; basic knowledge of electronics and instrumentationRecent experience in EMG and ENG in addition to EEG preferred but not required. Will accept candidates without an Associated degree if certified in one of the modalities.Combination of post--secondary education and experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
