Under the routine supervision of the Electronic Crew Leader, tests and repairs single and polyphase electric meters, totalizing systems, and current transformers to ensure proper calibration. Investigates and reports service irregularities. Requires substantial judgment and analytic ability to perform and record calculations when solving problems and/or performing routine repairs on metering equipment. Tests, installs, and maintains district water meters. Installs and maintains traffic light system. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Conducts field tests of various electric and water meters and related equipment and instruments for correct calibration and makes appropriate adjustments where necessary. Programs single phase and polyphase meters to OMU standards Installs, repairs, and tests both primary and secondary instrument rated meter services Occasionally performs work on energized secondary conductors up to 480V line to line Programs and installs controllers for the operation of VAR controlled capacitor banks Programs and installs voltage and load recorders and analyzes data collected Operates bucket truck in close proximity to traffic at a height up to 35 feet Operates cranes to install mast arms and poles Read electrical schematics and diagrams to troubleshoot issues Installs, programs and maintains traffic control equipment. Investigates billing questions related to meter discrepancies and possible theft of energy. Prepares and maintains documentation of meter and equipment repairs. Assists Service, Line, and Communications departments. Records all service account and meter history data into computer software system. Use mainframe computer system as related to metering. Conducts shop testing of meters, calibrating within OMU standards. Assists in installation of fiber optic facilities. Uses personal computer to install programs and retrieve data from various electronic meter and signal control devices. Installs and maintains traffic light system. Programs and installs complex timing schemes via PC to electronic traffic controller. Temporarily performs duties of Crew Leader. On 24-hour call and perform stand-by per scheduled rotation. This role requires a thirty-minute response time. Performs System Utility Technician duties as required. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area; e.g. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc., plus 2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. COMMUNICATION SKILLS Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS Ability to utilize common sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral or diagrammed instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Knowledge and Abilities Up to 24 months of education or training beyond the high school level in electrical theory or related technical field. Completion of Classification Competency Training. Thorough knowledge of standard procedures and practices of testing, repairing and maintaining various metering equipment and tools. Basic knowledge of electronics, algebra and trigonometry as well as skills in the use of voltage and ampere meters needed. Mechanical aptitude necessary. Valid driver's license required. First-aid/CPR certification required. Experience One to two years meter testing and calibration experience. One to two years traffic signal maintenance and installation experience.
Salary: $29.67 - $37.08 an hour
