GENERAL FUNCTION: Under the direction of the site director and the lead teacher, the Early Headstart Teacher is responsible for the safety and well-being of the children in his/her group and working where and when needed. The Early Headstart Teacher will have specific assignments that provide for the children’s social, physical, spiritual and mental growth and will also work in any support role necessary for the operation of the child care program. KNOW HOW - QUALIFICATIONS: The incumbent must be at least 16 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. He/She must bring to this position the ability and desire to work patiently with infant/toddler age group and the willingness to accept supervision / direction. There must be self assurance in holding and caring for babies and/or toddlers. He/She should have a knowledge of child/adult interaction and infant/toddler growth and development levels. The individual must also have general knowledge of nutrition and health. A CDA is a requirement for this position or willing to obtain a CDA. Within 60 days of employment must possess (and provide copies of) a valid CPR and First Aid card verifying successful completion of CPR and First Aid training and which thereafter is the responsibility of employee to maintain CPR and First Aid certification in “current” status. Within 60 days must understand and provide a signed YMCA Child Abuse Code of Conduct. Within 30 days of employment a clean criminal record check must be on file at the day care site. Within 21 days of employment must have: a current TB free report, a signed sworn disclosure statement, and consent to a CANIS report. This position requires specific skills in proper role modeling for children, patience, maintaining a safe / clean environment and willingness to expand child care knowledge through seminars and trainings. This individual should also evidence a high degree of Christian commitment, and have a personality that will enhance task accomplishment. He/She should be compatible with people generally, but specifically with staff, Y members, volunteers, program participants and parents. PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES: 1. Assisting teacher with daily activities as needed 2. Attending trainings, in-service seminars and staff meetings 3. Willing to accept and follow directions 4. Actively participating in all activities 5. Assisting with field trips as per curriculum (including but not limited to driving YMCA vehicle) 6. Working with a small group of children under supervision of lead teacher 7. Caring for children’s physical needs 8. Being responsible for the safety of the children at all times, including understanding and being able to implement emergency procedures as necessary 9. Preventing, identifying and reacting properly to child abuse situations 10. Assisting the staff with or assuming other duties as required for the operation of the child care program 11 Maintaining a safe / clean environment, assisting with basic cleaning duties 12. Attending parent-child events as required 13. Being committed to regular work attendance 14. Demonstrating a positive attitude towards parents, children and co-workers 15. Demonstrating proper behavior for children as role model 16. Supervising play - structured or unstructured. 17. Recording activities or maintaining daily log as needed 18. Demonstrating knowledge of child development and effective discipline techniques 19. Ability to create a loving and caring atmosphere within the YMCA program 20. Supporting the program and the goals of the YMCA 21. Must achieve 8 points of approved training (does not include first aid and CPR training) within the fiscal year. EFFECT ON END RESULT: The effectiveness of the incumbent can be measured when: 1. The basic needs of children are met and transition between and during activities run smoothly 2. Promotion of favorable feelings toward the child care center and the YMCA in general 3. Positive growth and nurturing of children in the program are evidenced by meeting individual development needs 4.
