Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for a Reference and Instruction Librarian, which is a full-time, twelve-month professional faculty position.
The Reference and Instruction Librarian manages the Writing & Research Center and leads the department by initiating, promoting, and providing a full range of responsive, high-quality reference services to individuals and groups. The Reference and Instruction Librarian supervises and trains the part-time Writing & Research Specialist and 3-5 part-time Writing & Research Consultants in conducting reference interviews, using information sources, and tracking interventions in the Student Success Management System. The librarian also plans, implements, markets, and evaluates the library’s information literacy instruction program, including teaching face-to-face and virtual workshops. Some weekend and evening hours are required.
Candidates selected for an interview will conduct a 20-minute mock information literacy instruction session. Further details will be provided at the time interviews are scheduled.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a Master’s Degree from an ALA Accredited Library/Information Science program. Experience in the design and delivery of library instruction. Experience navigating and demonstrating library databases. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work evening and weekend hours as needed.
Additional Considerations
Experience providing reference services and information literacy instruction in an academic library. Experience supporting diverse populations in a library setting. Experience supervising employees or student workers in a library setting. Experience using and creating LibGuides, online modules for a Learning Management System, or other virtual instruction tutorials for college students.
