Full job description
Collects specimens from patients, performs basic pre-analytic processing of specimens and distributes specimens to testing areas; also performs clerical and miscellaneous duties.

Performs all duties required of a Lab Assistant 2. Provides hands on back-up support to the processing and phlebotomy personnel in the performance of all operational activities as required to meet service imperatives.
Acts as the on-site technical resource to all laboratory assistants for specimen collection, processing, and other associated tasks.
Provides day-to-day supervision of phlebotomy and processing personnel:
• Ensuring accurate and timely collection of patient blood samples.
• Verifying timely processing of patient samples.
Assisting with troubleshooting of various processes in the work area.
Coordinates laboratory activities to complement the duties and responsibilities of the Quality Assurance Manager.
• Participates in the monthly QMS meetings, presenting activities and metric outcomes to review and assess compliance, developing and implementing remedial activity plans, as needed, and activities for quality improvement
• Accountable for customer satisfaction
• Works cooperatively in a team environment: supporting senior laboratory and management staff.
Ensures operational compliance with the clinical laboratory’s Quality Management Systems (QMS) Program and delivering the routine QMS associated metrics
Serves as a communication link between the technical team and the department employees. Provides communication to and from their work group with the manager and other lead techs.
Provides initial training and subsequent competency assessment for all testing personnel
• Training, supervising, and assessing the competency of testing personnel.
• Annually evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel.
Participation in the laboratory continuing education program to insure all employees have the opportunity for professional growth.
Provides on-site technical management of areas such as:
• Policy Review and update, including communication of staff about changes
• Preventive Maintenance
• Regulatory Compliance Documentation/Reports
• Coordinating activities and preparing for regulatory inspections
Ordering and managing inventory and installation and qualification of laboratory supplies, reagents and equipment.
Maintains currency in the field through participation in continuing education opportunities.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

EDUCATION:
High school diploma or GED required; completion of formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent is preferred.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of one year experience as an Asst - Lab II
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Ability to read and comprehend written information required; ability to effectively and efficiently perform a variety of job duties in a stressful, fast paced environment is required; Phlebotomy skills preferred; keyboarding skills preferred.
Superior time management, planning and organization skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Critical thinking skills to support quality decision-making
Working knowledge of basic computer applications, such as word and excel
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
Phlebotomy certification preferred
