Job Description:
The DeLaney Center is a recently established unit focused on southern race relations, culture and politics. The DeLaney Center Postbaccalaureate Fellow will be a new or recent graduate with a strong interest in exploring contemporary racial issues through a variety of disciplinary approaches and theoretical perspectives. The Fellow is responsible for identifying, developing, and implementing projects that enable students to partner with local organizations and produce significant contributions to the understanding of race and southern-ness. In addition, the Fellow coordinates the Center’s social media and communications strategy, organizes the Center’s student advisory group, and completes the Center’s annual inventory of courses and research tied to race and the South. This is a two-year term position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024.

Essential and Related Functions:

Cultivates mutually beneficial collaborations between the DeLaney Center and community partners. In coordination with the Director, seeks opportunities for W&L students to contribute to local initiatives that harmonize with the Center’s mission.

Primarily responsible for administering, maintaining and assessing performance of the DeLaney Center communications strategy and content calendar in consultation with Director. Collaborates with the Director to develop a strategic communications plan. This includes the website, social media, and interface with internal and external audiences. Serves as the primary liaison between the Center and W&L Communications and Public Affairs to ensure consistency in messaging about Center initiatives and to increase the visibility of programing. Attends Center events and actively participates in initiatives to ensure programming success.

Regularly convenes students to discuss DeLaney Center programming.  Building on these sessions, conducts analysis and prepares a formal report describing strengths and weaknesses of the Center’s events during the academic year.  Makes suggestions for programmatic changes/enhancements.

Compiles a report that lists courses and research that focuses on Southern race relations, culture, and politics.

Collaborates in editing and formatting funding applications and award nominations.

Contributes to planning and execution of Center initiatives and events including DeLaney Center Saturdays, Screen to Square Film Series, DeLaney Dialogues, and the Race and Southern-ness Speaker Series.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required

Willingness to commit to the position for two years.

Strong communication and writing skills and demonstrated organizational abilities are expected.

Ability to work as part of the collaborative DeLaney Center team, and capable of creative self-direction.

Preference will be given to candidates who are recent graduates and W&L alumni.

Must have a valid driver’s license

Ability to work occasional evenings and weekend days in support of special Center events.
