General Description Under the general direction of the Chief of Police and direct supervision of the Sergeant on duty, to work regular shift assignments and to perform all functions of the Police Department as outlined in the personnel rules and regulations.

• Preserves and maintains public peace.
• Protects life and property.
• Detects and prevents crime.
• Enforces all laws and ordinances.
• Responds to accidents, fires and other incidents which may be observed.
• Apprehends and arrests law violators.
• Assists other Officers, as required.
• Collects and preserves evidence.
• Writes reports of crimes, accidents and other incidents and investigations.
• Searches for missing persons.
• Protects crime scenes.
• Recovers and assumes preliminary custody of lost, stolen or abandoned property.
• Escorts vehicles and parade traffic.
• Enforces parking regulations.
• Interviews witnesses, victims and suspects.
• Testifies in court.
• Assists at domestic disputes.
• Assists in investigations.
• Administers first aid and performs rescue and recovery functions.
• Reports all observed criminal activity, traffic violations and other hazardous conditions to law enforcement dispatcher and immediate supervisor and takes appropriate action.
• Acts in a supervisory capacity in the absence of supervisory personnel, as is determined by seniority and/or accepted department practice.
• Maintains a minimum level of proficiency in the use of department issued firearms through periodic range qualification and classroom training.
• Adheres to all departmental safety standards and guidelines.
• Attends all required and assigned training and maintains current licenses and certificates as may be required by federal and state regulation and City policy.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA's) • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws.
• Thorough knowledge of Police Policy Manual, routing forms, reports and time sheets.
• Ability to effectively deal with the public.
• Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with fellow Officers and people in related agencies.
• Considerable knowledge of the use of weapons, Taser, pepper spray, baton and handcuffs.
• Knowledge of current events and local geography.
• Ability to handle stress and remain in control at all times and knowledge of de-escalation procedures.
• Knowledge of and ability to use a digital camera, audio recorder, personal computer and associated software.
• Knowledge of and ability to effectively apply generally accepted law enforcement methods related to the prevention, detection and suppression of criminal activity.
Education and Experience Must meet the education or reciprocity requirements set by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and must be licensed or eligible to be licensed as a full-time police officer by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training.  Eligible to be licensed is defined as having completed the academic, skills training and passing the license exam.  Must possess a valid driver’s license.  An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or equivalent is preferred along with prior full-time law enforcement experience.
Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of 10 to in excess of 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to vibration exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and Animals and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
