Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
The Get REAL (Refocusing Education on Adult Learners) Career and Work-Based Advisor will meet with prospective students before they enroll and current students at the college to shape a vision for their future and receive ongoing encouragement. The advisor will work with students and other stakeholders, providing and/or advising regarding current labor market information, career pathways, and eligible training resources so underserved and other adult learners can make informed decisions based on their own interests and aptitudes. The position will favorably impact active student success and post-graduation economic success through the planning and delivery of full-cycle, comprehensive career services. Assists students with planning, preparation through work-based learning (e.g., internships, job shadowing, apprenticeships), and employment search activities. Provides direct individual and group career advising and coaching to prospective and current students, administering and interpreting appropriate assessment instruments. Works to promote the inclusion of career-readiness and placement activities in the classroom. Presents and promotes information on education and training programs, work-based learning and employment opportunities, and career support services to groups of students, and various internal and external stakeholders. Serves students from all demographics, with a special emphasis under the Get REAL grant in time and effort in service to adult and underrepresented students.
This is a full-time, restricted position funded by the Title III Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) Get REAL Grant—-Refocusing Education on Adult Learners. Funding for this position has been secured through September 30, 2025. This position is dependent upon the conditions of the Get REAL grant.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Experience and/or education in career counseling, coaching, student advising, facilitation or teaching, and/or service of adult learners.
• Education, training, and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree is required.
• Experience working with the public and providing direct services to a diverse community, inclusive of under-recognized or under-resourced populations.
• Experience that exhibits strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks under time pressure.
• Experience using Microsoft Office computer applications including Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of career development, work-based or experiential learning, educational and training programs, employment services, academic and career advising, career coaching or counseling, recruiting, and/or activities of college outreach program.
• Effective communication practices with diverse individuals at all organizational levels, internal and external to the college, to include both written and verbal communication.
• Ability to assess needs and develop goal-oriented action plans in alignment with the Get REAL grant and college priorities.
• Ability to work well with diverse types of people and support the strategic goal of encouraging a respectful, nurturing, and caring environment of cultural diversity.
• Demonstrate effective facilitation and presentation skills; ability to perform well with or without supervision; ability to organize and prioritize work to achieve goals and meet deadlines; knowledge of the purpose and mission of the community college.
• Ability to encourage, coach and connect students to career opportunities and college and community resources to encourage program persistence and preparation for economic success.
• Ability to support embedded career services throughout existing academic programs.
• Ability to utilize career management platforms to assist students with career planning and support.
• Must have completed or be willing and able to complete the Virginia Career Coach Certification Program within 6 months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience integrating online and web-based tools that support career or academic advising, workforce services, and/or college retention or graduate success efforts or experience working with student management software or CRM’s.
• Experience in career or employment services, career coaching, higher education, workforce services, human resources, or recruiting.
• Bachelor’s degree concentration in counseling, student affairs/personnel, human resources, or a human services or related field
• Considerable knowledge of career assessment and exploration software, career services and work-based learning management platforms.
