Summary of Responsibilities
The Ophthalmic Assistant is responsible for daily patient care and flow in eye care clinic.
List of Responsibilities/Duties
• Promptly and professionally assists the doctor in patient care.
• Performs technical workups, and special testing.
• Gathers exam focused, comprehensive histories
• Ensures proper documentation of the medical record
• Communicates with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, medications, symptoms, etc.
• Maintains and cleans all equipment being used.
• Returns phone calls to patients and pharmacies.
• Assists in minor surgery.
• Maintains patient confidentiality.
Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.
Minimum Demonstrated Skills
• Demonstrates working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms and ocular meds.
• Efficiently and accurately interviews patients and documents histories in electronic health record.
• Accurately performs:
• Visual Acuity Testing
• Lensometry
• Refractions
• Keratometry
• Tonometry
• Visual Fields
• Amsler Grid
• Muscle Testing
• Pupil Exams
• Color Vision Testing
• Optical Coherence Tomography Testing
• Utilizes proper eye drop technique and sterility.
• Understands characteristics of common anterior segment disorders.
• Displays consistent professionalism.
• Is energetic and empathetic with patients.
• Consistently display positive rapport with fellow employees.
• Cooperates with supervisory staff and physicians.
• Scribes for physician.
• Demonstrates flexibility in job assignment.
