GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision, performs protective and technical/specialized work associated with responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, maintaining security in the school systems, educating and informing youth and children's groups, preventing criminal acts, investigating crimes, directing and controlling traffic, participating in special operations, providing courtroom security, assisting with civil process and serving and protecting the citizens of the County. Reports to the Sergeant.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Enforces local and state codes, ordinances, laws and regulations both traffic and criminal to protect life and property, promote security and maintains law and order; seeks and apprehends offenders; reports traffic hazards, directs traffic, assists motorists and enforces traffic laws; patrols designated and high crime areas; coordinates efforts with other deputies; conducts K-9 narcotic searches; requests, executes and enforces emergency protective orders.
Responds to emergency calls; provides immediate response to emergency situations endangering life or property; administers first-aid, basic life saving, and other medically necessary treatments as first responder to an emergency scene; reports fires and other dangerous or hazardous situations; assists vehicle pursuit and establishing roadblocks; responds to alarm activation.
Maintain security in the school systems; patrols school areas and maintains awareness of suspicious activity; conducts walk-troughs to monitor activity within schools.
Interacts with children and students in the school systems; provides educational information and group instruction to youth groups on various topics; attends school activities and athletic events; develops positive relationships with students, school staff and administration; prepares and distributes various reports related to the school resource officer program.
Participates in the investigation of crimes, criminal activity, and traffic accidents; investigates reported crimes; preserves scene until arrival of investigator; secures and transports evidence; submits lab requests for analysis of evidence; initiates and takes reports for investigative purposes.
Provides assistance with the courtroom process; secures and transports suspects, criminals, and others to hearings; supervises inmates and juvenile offenders; provides courtroom security; opens and closes court; provides information to the public about court procedures; provides directions within the court building.
Assist with civil process; picks up and serves criminal arrest warrants and other legal documents; prepares cases and assists in the prosecution of criminals; provides courtroom testimony; communicates with judges and jury; assists individuals with completion and signing of paperwork as directed by judges and clerks; assists witnesses and victims during trial.
Serves and protects the citizens of the County; counsels juveniles and adults; provides references for outside resource assistance; answers questions and provides information to the public; prepares and presents information to the public on crime prevention, school resource program, and related topics.
Participate in special operations as assigned including SWAT, undercover, and hostage negotiations.
Performs non-emergency law enforcement duties; provides security at public events; directs funeral traffic; patrols County events; conducts sobriety and safety checkpoints; maintains awareness of the potential development of criminal activity.
Performs various administrative duties in support of the daily operations of the agency; answers phones; accepts payments and issues receipts; prepares monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual reports; records information concerning events and daily activities.
Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, criminal complaints, protective orders, search warrant affidavits, time sheets, alarm activation report, lab analysis requests; lab analysis reports, accident reports, incident reports, inmate transport logs, fingerprint cards, crime reports, arrest reports, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, arrest warrants, emergency protective orders, search warrants, written statements, criminal background history, lab analysis reports, court dockets, vehicle logs, road maps, K-9 supply invoices, civil documents, traffic summons, trespass notices, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, magistrates, business owners, social services, mental health officials, attorneys, judges, criminals, students, children, federal agents, animal control representatives, task force, park services, probation officers, fire and rescue, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Operates a variety of related equipment and machinery including a patrol vehicle, weapons, radios, radar's, and related law enforcement tools; utilizes various office equipment including a computer, multi-line phone system, copier, fax machine, and related office equipment; utilizes word processing and spreadsheet programs and performs data entry.
Ensures general/preventive maintenance tasks are performed to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition; conducts inspections on equipment and monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Maintains an awareness of new products, technologies, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional manuals and publications to increase knowledge of patrol, emergency response, law enforcement, and judicial trends; attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Vocational or technical degree with training emphasis in law enforcement supplemented by three to five years previous experience and/or training that includes law enforcement, patrol, court security, and familiarity with school resource; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess or be able to obtain a certification in basic law enforcement from a law enforcement academy. Must posses and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must be licensed to operate a firearm. Must be certified in basic first aid and CPR. May be required to attain and maintain other certifications as related to position or for specialized areas of assignment. FOIA knowledge or experience a plus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
