Description
Washington & Lee University School of Law invites applications for the position of Professor of Practice in our legal writing program. Responsibilities for this full-time faculty position include teaching two sections (approximately 20 students per section) of first-year legal writing each semester. Our first-year writing program is a two-semester, four-credit program. Students separately take a one-credit research course taught by library faculty. The legal writing program at W&L Law is highly collegial; it is comprised of two other faculty members and has no director. Faculty have the autonomy to develop their own approaches to the course in a very collaborative working environment. The Professor of Practice position is a nine-month, non-tenure track position.  Depending on the candidate’s level of experience, the initial contract may be for two, three, or five years, with the possibility of successive, presumptively renewable long-term contracts of five years or more. Legal writing faculty are eligible for professional development funds, summer writing grant stipends, and research assistant support; however, there is no scholarly writing requirement. Teaching responsibilities will begin in mid-August 2024.
Washington and Lee University promotes a dynamic and inclusive environment that allows students and employees of multiple backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives to learn, work, and thrive together. Successful candidates will contribute to that environment and exhibit potential for excellence in teaching and for vigorous scholarship. In keeping with the University Strategic Plan, we welcome applications from underrepresented minority candidates and members of other communities that are traditionally underrepresented in academia.
