Job Description
Summary
To be a visible leader and active participant in driving B&T to zero injuries. Under the direction of and collaborating with the Chief Engineer this role is accountable for leading a step change improvement in B&T’s quality systems and processes. B&T has the objective of ISO 9001 certification and maintaining the system with zero major findings going forward. It is expected to develop, implement, monitor and maintain efficient manufacturing processes and workflow for Bingham and Taylor manufacturing and auxiliary departments. This position will focus on continuous process improvement aimed at increasing productivity and quality in the entire process from raw material to finish products, while reducing non-valued activities, ultimately focused on cost reduction, and maximizing profit.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned that pertain to this classification.
* Be a visible example of safety leadership on the shop floor.
* Apply Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma tools and methodology in the implementation of manufacturing excellence initiatives.
* Lead productivity project process that delivers assigned cost savings/profit improvement objective.
* Generate and maintain Process Parameters database and issue Casting Job sheets for daily runs.
* Manage a portfolio of lean projects directed at reducing waste and improving quality to provide greater value; implements such tools as: 5S, KPI, SMED, VSM, and Kaizen.
* Mange the Quality and Melt Lab and their quality technicians in both shifts.
* Supervise Sand Lab and oversee sand testing. Monitor the molding sand properties and equipment through Historian database. Report on issues.
* Serve as the technical resource on molding sand and its components. Oversee the composition of the molding sand to maximize properties.
* Oversee metallurgical properties including sampling, compilation of chemical and physical data, analyzing results, reviewing trends and preparing summary reports for managers.
* Knowledgeable enough to develop a new chemistry for different metal if needed.
* Grow and develop early career metallurgists.
* Lead other departments on process and material improvements. Arrange for sample materials to improve process or reduce cost. Coordinate with other departments to establish basic process control parameters for molding and melt. Create and implement inspection and testing criteria or procedures.
* Manage FAI (First Article Inspection) to regular production for quality control.
* Collect and analyze production samples and/or photos to evaluate quality.
* Track defects, test results, or other regularly reported quality control data.
* Facilitate the analysis of product scrap, documenting causes and preventative actions.
* Trouble shoot process issues with an eye toward systematic improvements.
* Assist in the root cause analysis of internal process to avoid escapes to customers.
* Verify that raw materials, purchased parts or components, in-process samples, and finished products meet established testing and inspection standards.
* Investigate operational problems affecting quality production and make recommendations for solutions.
* Serve as liaison for technical advancements with corporate and other group.
* Confer with Customer Service and Sales departments to define client requirements and expectations.
* Liaise with production Master Scheduler for ensuring that new and existing products have adequate BOM and routings.
* Responsible for the routine maintenance and changes to existing foundry tooling. Maintain tooling to optimize production efficiency, ensure dimensional accuracy and minimize scrap and rework; and coordinate necessary tooling modifications as required.
* Assist with manufacturing documentation required for new and changed product manufacturing i.e. revise drawings, BOM’s, accurate work instructions and workmanship standards and process procedures
* Provide manufacturing process control data to include control charts and process capability, to improve specific processes and monitor and measure progress to target.
* Train and supervise staff on new development processes and technology.
* Support advances in green sand molding, and keep abreast of industry advancements through the American Foundry Society and other related sources.
* Controls material usage and waste while seeking ways to save money through cost reduction studies and implementation of projects.
* Must have a bias to time on the shop floor vs. time at the desk.
Education / Experience:
* B.S. in Metallurgical, Mechanical or Materials Engineering preferred, or college degree with 7+ years working in manufacturing (prior foundry experience is preferred).
* Proven track record and working knowledge in foundry industry is preferred.
* Must have technical understanding of whole foundry operation from raw material to final products.
* Experience with ISO 9001 is preferred.
* Multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while consistently delivering quality work
* Solid time management, communication, and organizational skills.
* Ability to take direction and responsibility for projects.
* Self-starter able to work with limited supervision.
* Ability to deliver high-quality, detailed work independently, highlighting key risks, and design dependencies to technical teams.
* Communication with cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to make data-driven decisions.
