Job Description
Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics
Position Description
The Department of Mathematics at Washington and Lee University invites applications for a one-year visiting teaching position for the 2024-25 academic year.
W&L is a small, prestigious liberal arts institution, where mathematics is one of the largest departments. To achieve our mission as a liberal arts college, we continually strive to foster an inclusive campus community, which recognizes the value of all persons regardless of identity. Our department is committed to preparing our students for engaged citizenship by creating a vibrant educational environment that is rich with cultural, social, and intellectual diversity. Diversity is a core value of the Department of Mathematics, as we believe that the educational environment is enhanced when people with diverse backgrounds and ideas come together to learn. In keeping with the University Strategic Plan, we welcome applications from underrepresented minority candidates and members of other communities that are traditionally underrepresented in academia.
We are seeking an applicant with a successful record in the classroom as well as a passion for excellence in teaching. We mentor a large, active, and growingly diverse group of talented students; the number of mathematics majors is five times the national average for a school our size. Almost all W&L students will take at least one mathematics course from us before they graduate, and we offer a variety of interesting and attractive courses at lower levels of mathematics that serve our student body at large.
Our academic year is broken into two 12 weeks terms and a 4 week term. The teaching load is 6 courses per year with small class sizes of 15 – 25 students.
