Director of Mechanical Engineering
Full-time, Permanent Opportunity in Roanoke, Virginia
Overview:
The Director of Mechanical Design Engineering will lead a multi-plant design team in the design and development of state-of-the-art power transformer structure and containment. This leadership over analysis and design to specification equipment weighing up to 200 ton demands, assurance of design process, structural and thermal analysis, manufacturing documentation and review for successful assembly and outside vendor fabrication. The design teams report to the plant and consist of electrical, mechanical and control designers. Join us in this pivotal leadership role and steer the future of transformer technology.
Responsibilities:
* Oversee the design and development of mechanical assembly, ensuring productibility, cost, and industry standard.
* Lead and mentor a team of mechanical design engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and excellence. The designers team reports to Plant management. This position will ensure design manual is applied consistently in all 6 plants.
* Coordinate with corporate R&D engineers, to develop new designs requiring features or larger size.
* Establish design standards, develop automation, and process assurance in mechanical design.
* Support with sourcing and vendor quality assurance group to qualify additional sources, ensuring quality and cost-effectiveness.
* Lead design concept reviews, and NCR Root cause correction.
* Establish key performance metrics for the design team and drive performance.
* Foster a culture of safety, ensuring all design protocols meet industry and regulatory standards.
Requirements:
* Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
* A minimum of 20 years of experience in thermo-mechanical design of equipment, with at least 5 years in a managerial role, in custom electromechanical equipment design.
* Knowledge of FEA analytical tools and system design.
* Expert in CAD design practice and other FEM analysis tools.
* Proven leadership of teams to manage multifunctional design team.
* Engineering problem-solving skills.
* Superior communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Strategic thinker with the ability to plan.
* Strong organizational experience in 100s of engineers.
* Able to travel 30-40% to other offices.
Compensation:
* $170,000 to $180,000 salary, depending on experience
* 20% annual bonus, paid bi-annually
