Job Description:
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Financial Aid (Education and Support Specialist III, pay band 4) within the Office of Financial Aid, Veterans Affairs, and Records. The primary purpose of this Office is to assist students who have financial need by removing financial barriers to postsecondary education, and to ensure consistent application of need analysis formulas in compliance with appropriate policies and regulations. The Office coordinates, develops, maintains, and delivers a comprehensive program of financial aid funding resources for the students of Virginia Western. The Assistant Director of Financial Aid will manage day to day operations of financial aid processing, train staff; configure, and test various components of the college’s Student Information System (PeopleSoft) and supervise staff directly related to awarding financial aid. The position also works directly with the VCCS to modify PeopleSoft software and software set-up to meet college, federal, and state requirements as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Expert knowledge of financial aid principles and practices as evident through considerable working experience in a college financial aid office, including compliance, participation in both federal and state audits, governmental reporting at both the federal and state level, systems and process management, supervising or overseeing others awarding financial aid, experience with processes associated with R2T4, and staff training both new and cross training. Working knowledge of Title IV regulations. Extensive work experience with PeopleSoft Student Information System or other student information management system. Strong attention to detail. Strong organizational, analytical, and math skills. Expert working knowledge of financial aid principles and practices; thorough working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines; extensive experience with student information management systems; and outstanding interpersonal/human relations skills. Able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a diverse population of students, parents, faculty, and administrators. Able to travel on occasion to off campus events. Must be able to work flexible hours to include monthly evenings and weekends Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Public speaking and presentations skills. Ability to work under pressure while managing multiple workflows with varying deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical experience within student information systems analyzing, identifying and resolving data conflicts. National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators credentialing. Supervisory experience within a Commonwealth of Virginia state agency.
