GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
• Performs a variety of duties in the preparation and service of meals to students, staff and visitors.
• Maintains the cleanliness of the kitchen and cafeteria areas and performs related duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Other duties may be assigned
• Assists in the preparation of meal portions which involves cooking and baking using various utensils and appliances; may perform specialized duties as baking, frying, broiling, etc. or preparing meats, vegetables, salads, desserts, sandwiches, etc.
• Arranges food and beverage items (e.g. placing in steam tables, a la carte trays, filing racks, mobile carts, etc.) for the purpose of making items available to students and staff. Operates and/or utilizes various appliances and equipment such as ovens, stoves, mixers, dish washers, deep fryers, etc.
• Prepares and serves food and beverage items according to approved recipes (e.g. fruits, vegetables, salads, sandwiches, entrees, soups, baked goods, etc.) in order to meet mandated nutritional and health requirements and projected meal requirements and/or requests of students and school personnel.
• Serves students and staff from the cafeteria counter; keeps dispensing and related equipment full and operating for service. Evaluates the appearance and temperature of food; inspects food items, work areas, etc. for the purpose of preventing cross-contamination of food borne illnesses.
• Maintains the cleanliness of the kitchen and cafeteria areas; washes dishes; clears counters, sweeps and mops floors; cleans freezers, coolers, and storage areas; cleans kitchen appliances; cleans and maintains the garbage collection area.
• Stocks food, condiments and supplies for the purpose of maintaining adequate quantities and security of items. Stores stock in an efficient and safe manner. Reports equipment malfunctions for the purpose of maintaining equipment in safe working order.
• Inspects, weighs, measures, washes and generally prepares food items for cooking and service.
• Performs duties in compliance with safety and health standards at all time
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school graduate or equivalent with demonstrated aptitude for successful performance of the job duties; prior food service experience preferred.
Knowledge
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of all standards and regulations pertaining to food service/preparation and the sanitation of food service areas. Knowledge of methods, procedures and activities involved in conducting prescribed lunchroom duties. Understands the methods required for productivity and quality standards. Knows of the safety precautions relative to working with food service equipment and materials.
Skills/Effort
Ability to conduct food preparation and service activities in an effective and timely manner in accordance with all applicable regulations, standards and requirements. Ability to interact in an effective manner with co-workers, supervisor, students, teachers, and the general public. Ability to operate and utilize all food service equipment, tools and materials in a safe and effective manner. Ability to maintain food service areas, equipment and utensils.
Additional Physical, Cognitive, And Other Requirements
Duties involve food service work that includes continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, reaching and lifting. Must exert between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurrent basis and use fingers, hands, and limbs in tasks that require considerable adeptness and speed. Must be able to talk, read and hear, and effectively perceive and exchange information in a variety of oral, written and/or printed formats. Must be able to record and exchange data, and follow or deliver verbal or written instructions. Duties require the ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide. Must be able to distinguish differences in colors, textures, and appropriately perceive depth and spatial relationships. Must have sufficient hand, eye and foot coordination to use or operate food service equipment, items, supplies, utensils, etc. Must take direction, follow policies, procedures and menus, and interact well with others, including students and coworkers. Must be adaptable to stressors, tight deadlines, frequent changes, etc.
Working Conditions
Conducts duties in a cafeteria/kitchen environment with routine exposure to discomforting conditions such as heat, cold, food preparation equipment and utensils, smoke and steam. Requires the ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require attention, and meeting tight deadlines. Physical demands involve kitchen work that requires the lifting/moving of items weighing up to fifty pounds. Job requires the operation of standard cafeteria/food service equipment.
Responsibility: No budgetary or supervisory responsibility.
Terms Of Employment
• 182 Days, 6.5 Hours per Day
• Salary pursuant to the district salary schedule
• FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
• Eligible for state benefits
