This role is responsible for overseeing and managing the API SM EH&S activities across Innovative Medicine, both internal and external network, with a focus on ensuring compliance with EH&S regulations/standards and the safety of all employees, visitors, and contractors. This individual will lead a global EH&S team, with an emphasis on building efficiencies through the alignment of processes, procedures, and programs to support a dynamic SM API business.
Director EH&S SM API Innovative Medicine is accountable for the effective alignment, deployment, and execution of EH&S strategies, policies, and standards. This individual is also responsible for the overall performance within the franchise including compliance, risk reduction and management initiatives. This role requires a change leader who creates heightened organizational consciousness of EH&S issues to deeply embed a strong EH&S culture across the organization.
Director EH&S SM API Innovative Medicine is also responsible for Process Safety Management program deployment across Innovative Medicine
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement SM API EH&S business strategies and align the business with enterprise EH&S goals and objectives, which includes budget management, building organizational models and competency to align with the risk factors at each API location.
• Cultivates deep expertise and fosters continuous improvement within the SM API & EH&S organization, processes and the digital ecosystem in execution of the EH&S strategy, management system and assurance processes.
• Lead and manage a global team of EH&S professionals, providing direction, guidance, and support to ensure risk management and compliance with regulatory and Johnson & Johnson requirements, as well as PSM program deployment across Innovative Medicine.
• Drive greater efficiency and standardization in the deployment of EH&S resources, processes, procedures, and programs across the SM API business, internal & external, while advocating for innovative approaches to solve business challenges.
• Accountable for monitoring and delivering strong EH&S performance results and managing Small Molecule API platform EH&S resources (talent/budget).
• Provide coaching & mentoring, develop EH&S competencies, capabilities and talent in the SM API & PSM activities for Innovative Medicine.
• Lead the Process Safety Management program within the SM API Cluster. Implement, maintain, and lead PSM governance process at SM API Cluster. Owner of Process Hazard analysis, including PHA, HAZOP. Keep related standards, procedures, and guidelines up to date and adapt accordingly to include changes in legislation, J&J guidelines, or industry best practices.
• Investigate incidents related to process safety to identify system root causes and implement prevention and corrective measures with full Cluster leveraging in mind and share learnings across J&J.
• Identify needed PSM investments and secure funding for implementation. Act as sponsor for critical projects during execution.
• Lead a team of Operations PSM experts. Develop and attract safety experts in PSM. Build a PSM oriented career ladder.
• Leads a cross departmental team with MAM and EH&S for tactical PSM alignment including technical safety and safety engineering.
• Serve as the key conduit for PSM strategic alignment between Enterprise EH&S and the API Cluster.

The Director EH&S API SM Innovative Medicine is also responsible for overall performance within the franchise including compliance, risk reduction and management initiatives. • Participate in SM API LT, strategic planning and decision-making processes, working collaboratively with Sr. Leaders in Innovative Medicine business & EH&S organization to achieve organizational objectives.
• Assures monitoring of new legislation and emerging issues that could impact the SM API J&J business and ensure full compliance in a cost competitive manner.
• Continuously keeps oversight of all aspects of SM API EH&S performance, providing direction to Site EH&S leaders and Site EH&S teams; Leads and carries out activities including Talent Management, Budget Management, Cost allocation, and regulatory tracking processes; and provides EH&S technical assistance and support as needed across SM API business.
• Responsible to achieve best in class results by collaborating with business partners to integrate EH&S into the business in a way that drives a shared accountability for EH&S, compliance, risk reduction and drives operational value and ensure business continuity.
• Support the development and execution of SM API external supply risk mitigation strategy ensuring compliance with applicable J&J and regulatory expectations, protects J&J equity, minimizing the risk of external supply chain disruption due to an EH&S related event.
• Develop and maintain tools and processes that identify risk, track issues, and monitor/improve EH&S performance at External Supplier sites.
• Lead SM/API External Supply assessments and audits programs for the enterprise, summarizing results, updating leadership, and presenting key issues and metrics.
• Oversee global business plans for all business partners that require EH&S SM/API external supply support.
• Identify significant unmitigated and/or emerging EH&S risks related to PM/API external supply chain and develop action plans to resolve identified issues.
• Represent J&J’s position on key external PM/API working partnerships
Qualifications:
Education:
• University/Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering or related EH&S disciplines
Experience and Skills:
Required:
• 10-15 Years Experience
• Confirmed Process Safety Management Expertise & experience
• Strong communicator who is credible and self-assured; strong technical skills with the ability to explain complex issues and requirements in an easily understood manner; ability to negotiate with and influence key business leaders.
• Ability to work in a matrix, team-oriented environment.
• Highly developed interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
• Strong written and oral English communication skills.
• Strong experience working in Microsoft Office.
• Experience working in CURVE – J&J EH&S Data Management tool.
Preferred:
• Master Degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering or related EH&S disciplines
• EH&S for Pharmaceutical R&D and/or Medical Device R&D
• Experience working with EH&S data and data management systems.
• Capability to energize and inspire others towards higher performance and execution.
• Passion about the role, a positive “can do” attitude.
