Have you always wanted to care for animals who are in need? If so, we are seeking multiple dedicated people to fill open Part-Time Animal Care and Enrichment Assistant (Kennel Attendant) positions. The Roanoke Valley SPCA is a community-focused adoption facility working to keep pets and people together by providing pet adoption, retention, and education services in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.
Duties include: ensuring the cleanliness of the animal living environment; daily medical and behavioral observations; cleaning bowls and litter pans, taking out trash, mopping, laundry, etc.; caring for the animals including feeding, watering, medicating animals, etc.; and providing training of animals to increase adoption opportunities, including consistent use of Fear Free practices.
Requirements: Applicants for these positions must be enthusiastic, reliable, and detail-oriented. Excellent communication skills are required for this position and staff must have reliable transportation. Staff must be able to stand on their feet for long periods of time, lift up to 40lbs, and be capable of handling pets of all sizes (including large dogs). Animal care experience in a kennel environment is preferred but not required. Fear Free Certification is preferred but not required.
Schedule: Candidates will typically work 20 to 25 hours per week. Applicants must have the flexibility to work various days, lengths of day, weekends and holidays.
Changes to schedules may occur to accommodate vacation requests or sick leave. Weekend and holiday hours are required for this position. There are also rare instances where overnight care for the animals during inclement weather are possible, but not common (less than once a year).
