Metrology/Tooling Engineer Specialist
The Metrology Engineer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of our assembly, fabrication, and production lines, ultimately contributing to the delivery of high-quality, defect-free products that meet the expectations of our internal and external customers. This position will support various departments, including Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Design, by utilizing cutting-edge scanning equipment, precision measuring instruments, and technical expertise to uphold the highest standards of product quality and manufacturing excellence.
Essential Job Functions
Manufacturing Engineering:
• Utilize Creaform Metrascan technology to scan parts, assemblies, and tooling.
• Utilize SolidWorks to overlay scanned data on 3D Models to identify non-conforming product.
• Proficiently interpret blueprints (drawings), mylars, and 3D models.
• Maintain a Rolling Action Item List (RAIL) to schedule and complete work.
• Use a variety of precision measuring instruments to check tool tolerances and dimensions throughout the facility.
• Prepare Scanning-related Manufacturing Engineering/Tooling reports.
• Ensure tooling designs are feasible for manufacturing and maximize producibility.
• Generate Design Change Requests (DCR’s), Manufacturing Engineering Support Requests (MESR’s), and Requests For Technical Services (RFTS) as required.
• Maintain a proper Tooling Inventory Master List, control records, and database.
• Perform scheduled annual Tooling Audits to ensure tooling meets engineering requirements.
• Resolve equipment/tooling-related issues in a timely and comprehensive manner.
• Collaborate with Facilities and EH&S Manager to ensure manufacturing processes and tooling adhere to current EH&S standards.
• Foster open and frequent communication and collaboration with Managers, Designers, Manufacturing Engineers, and Project Owners to ensure customer satisfaction.
• Perform other duties, tasks, and responsibilities as assigned.
Quality
• Prepare Scanning-related Inspection Reports.
• Scan Assemblies and Parts for conformance.
• Support First Article Inspections (FAIs).
• Support First Piece Parts inspections.
Design
• Scan Assemblies and Parts for conformance.
• Scan parts and assemblies for reverse engineering.
• Prepare Scanning-related Design reports.
• Contribute to the 2D to 3D migration project.
Skills And Abilities
• Proficiency in programming and using CMMs and Scanning equipment (e.g., Leica, Creaform, Faro, 3D Scanning, Spatial Analyzer software).
• Strong knowledge of micrometers, calipers, indicators, and other test equipment.
• Excellent documentation practices and attention to detail.
• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to work independently while maintaining a team-oriented approach.
• Previous experience in a manufacturing environment with an emphasis on tooling application.
• Technical writing experience.
• Familiarity with SAP, SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D modeling software), VX Inspect, VX Model, MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and Teams.
• Experience with tool design and manufacturing processes of jigs and fixtures, including welding, machining, bonding, and/or heat treatment.
Education And Experience
• A 4-year degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience is preferred.
• Knowledge of machining and automated machines is preferred.
• Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing setting.
