General Description Under the direction of the Fire Chief, firefighters protect and save life and property through effective rescue and firefighting work; extinguish fires, perform rescue operations, participate in training activities, and complete equipment and facility maintenance.  This involves hazardous and strenuous assignments under emergency conditions.
Volunteer firefighters receive a $6,750 pension per year of service.  Members must serve a minimum of 10 years to become vested.  The vested level at 10 years of service is 60% and that level increases 4% every year after that until the member is 100% vested at 20 years of service ($135,000).
You must ensure you make 45% of fire calls and 65% of meetings/trainings.
Volunteer firefighters also receive $10 per call, which is paid out at the end of the year.

Essential Functions of the Job / Knowledge, Skills and Abilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
• Responds to fire calls and extinguishes fires.
• Assists in calls for emergency medical services.
• Places hoses and ladders, operates pumps, booster lines, directs streams of water, uses other extinguishing agents as appropriate, and ventilates structures by opening windows or cutting holes.May operate aerial ladders, fire extinguishers, bars, and axes as needed.
• Rescues individuals from fires and other emergency situations.Evacuates individuals from burning structures and assists them to safety.
• Performs salvage activities, which may include removal of debris and excess water, de-smoking and temporary damage control of the structures and other related duties.
• Performs firefighting tasks, rescue operations, and other emergency response actions, under stressful conditions, while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
• Ventilates and forces entry of burning buildings by breaking glass; springing or forcing doors, windows or gates; cutting locks or bars, or breaking walls using appropriate safety gear and equipment.
• Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses related to equipment use, firefighting techniques, and rescue procedures.
• Participates in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing all fire related equipment.
• Cleans up and prepares equipment, including refueling vehicles, refilling water tanks, recharging air tanks and extinguishers, washing trucks and hand tools, drying and reloading hoses, and other work as needed.
• May respond to emergency calls for specialized services such as hazardous materials and confined space rescue.
• Under direction of the officers, work in a team environment under extremely stressful situations.
• Maintain all licenses and certificates as may be required by federal or state regulation or as may be required by City or Fire Department policy.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Knowledge of firefighting and emergency rescue equipment and techniques.
• Basic knowledge of building construction, electrical wiring, and fire codes.
• Knowledge of City street systems including location of major landmarks and commercial/industrial sites.
• Ability to operate and maintain a variety of firefighting equipment and tools.
• Ability to perform firefighting duties while on ladders and other climbing apparatuses at various heights above ground level.
• Ability to perform firefighting duties in all weather conditions and under adverse environmental conditions including flames, heat, smoke, fumes, irritants and hazardous material.
• Ability to work strenuously wearing heavy and restrictive turnout gear and equipment, such as self-contained breathing apparatus, hazardous material suits, face-masks, and other gear in all weather and in extreme heat.
• Knowledge and ability to properly use appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written communications and directives.
• Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively.
• Ability to lift and maneuver heavy equipment.
• Ability to lift 50 – 100 pounds on a regular basis.
• Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with other Fire Department members and with the general public.
• Ability and willingness to maintain strict confidentiality.
• Ability to operate vehicles and trucks in emergency situations and in congested traffic.
• The visual acuity to identify hazards, detect danger and read house numbers, street signs, placards and warnings, etc.
• Ability to exercise sensory functions (see, hear, touch, smell) and motor skills necessary to perform all duties assigned.
Education and Experience EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• High school diploma or GED equivalency; and
• Must be at least 18 years of age; and
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT • Ability to pass medical standards for self-contained breathing apparatus; and ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus while performing work duties.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
• Must maintain a primary residence within ten (10) minutes drive to the New Ulm Fire Station driving under normal conditions and posted speed limits.
• Must satisfactorily complete a background investigation, physical examination, and drug test.
• Completion of the Firefighters 1001 Essentials course work within 12 months of appointment.
• Completion of FEMA Incident Command System courses 100, 200, and 700 within 12 months of appointment.
• Advanced First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification or ability to obtain certification within 24 months of appointment.
• Accredited Firefighter I and II Certification within 12 months of appointment.
Physical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of 50 to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting and frequently climbing or balancing; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions(non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and working with explosives; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
