A qualified hand therapist can evaluate and treat any problem related to the upper extremity.Essential Job Functions:Patient Assessment: Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients with hand and upper extremity conditions to determine their needs, limitations, and goals.Treatment Planning: Develop customized treatment plans based on individual patient assessments, medical history, and the nature of the injury or condition.Orthotic Fabrication: Design and create custom orthotic devices, such as splints or braces, to support and protect injured or surgically repaired hands and arms.Therapeutic Interventions: Administer a wide range of therapeutic techniques, including manual therapy, exercises, and modalities like ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and heat/cold therapy.Scar Management: Address scar tissue issues through manual techniques, scar massage, and other therapeutic interventions to improve scar mobility and appearance.Wound Care: Provide wound care for patients with hand injuries or post-operative wounds to promote healing and prevent infection.Pain Management: Develop pain management strategies, which may include modalities and techniques to alleviate pain and discomfort.Range of Motion Restoration: Work to restore and improve joint mobility, muscle strength, and range of motion in the hand and upper extremity.Functional Training: Implement exercises and activities that focus on restoring functional hand and arm abilities, such as grasping, gripping, and fine motor skills.Edema Control: Employ techniques to manage and reduce swelling (edema) in the hand and upper extremity.Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about their conditions, treatment plans, and home exercise programs to promote recovery and prevent.
