Description The City of Roanoke is seeking a Virginia DCJS certified Police Officer to serve as a temporary criminal investigative detective.  The Detective will be responsible for conducting criminal investigations within the Roanoke Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).    The Detective will be assigned to one of the investigation units within CIB to include Crimes against Property, Crimes against Persons, and/or the Special Victims Unit based upon the agencies current staffing needs.  Specific job functions may vary based upon the area of assignment with the CIB.  The general work description involves serving the community and protecting life, property and the rights of the public.   Specific duties will include but not be strictly limited to conducting criminal investigations, preparing case files and reports, serving criminal process papers or court subpoenas, assisting with community functions, and testifying in court proceedings.  Stressors of the job include the usual hazards of law enforcement work.
Minimum expected working hours will be 24 hours a week with a maximum average of 32 hours a week allowed.   Work hours are between 8am – 4pm, Monday through Friday and subject to change on an as needed basis to allow for the uncertainty of conducting and investigating criminal activity.

This is a non-exempt position. Examples of Duties Police Duties
• Communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors
• Maintain proficiency in law enforcement duties and capabilities
• Operate an unmarked police vehicle
• Complete or supplement various reports such as police offense reports and maintain criminal investigative case files
• Skills to complete in-person interviews of witnesses, suspects, or any other persons related to assigned criminal investigations
• Serve legal papers such as summons, warrants, subpoenas and other legal documents and make physical arrests when necessary
• Investigate misdemeanor and felony crimes
• Be familiar and competent in preparing search warrants, affidavits, and court orders
• Available to testify in court proceedings in reference to criminal investigations
• Maintain any assigned police vehicles or other issued equipment
• Perform any other related duties as required

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Must have successfully completed basic law enforcement academy, the probationary period as police officer and be DJCS law enforcement certified in Virginia.  Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with a major in social or police science desirable but not required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with groups of customers or employees of organization. Fluency in Spanish is beneficial.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Current Virginia DCJS Certification.
