Job Description:
The Director of Core Systems, a key member of the Information Technology Services Leadership team, is responsible for leading and coordinating projects, functional area strategic and budget planning, and team building for all core services staff. Areas of operational oversight includes the institution’s servers, storage, applications services, cloud services and data centers.
Information Technology Services pursues a “cloud first” philosophy, utilizing cloud resources as a preference, but hosting locally (or hybrid) depending on security, scalability, performance, affordability, and other key factors. The Director follows the ITS Information Security Program and industry standard best practices to help ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all IT resources. The Director, along with the Core Systems team, is responsible for supporting ITS with viable, supportable solutions which meet and improve on the department's goals of supporting the University's mission.

Essential Functions:

Supervise the Core Systems team, coordinating staffing, mentoring, and management functions.

Lead a team of highly skilled professionals to coordinate their duties and activities related to the strategic mission.

Assist with managing core technologies and services, including but not limited to: DHCP, DNS, Okta, Duo, Active Directory, Box, Powershell, Office 365,  OneDrive, SQL Server, Exchange, Microsoft Azure, File Systems, Windows and Linux servers, antivirus for servers, Amazon Web Services (AWS), multifactor authentication methodologies, VMware virtualization, server and data backup methods and technologies, SAN and NAS storage solutions including fiber channel, and networking fundamentals.

Coordinate and manage external vendor support of products and services.

Manage data centers including supporting infrastructure such as generator, UPS, HVAC, fire suppression system, and water detection systems.

Forecast, prepare, and submit to the CIO annual operating and capital budget needs in support of Core Services efforts.

Serve as project manager for team efforts requiring higher level oversight.

Serve on the IT Leadership Team, collaborating with the CIO and peers on the strategic direction of technology at W&L.

Coordinate new product evaluation, configuration, and deployments with ITS Leadership Team and external departments.

Work autonomously and in groups to complete daily work and project work.

Follow the ITS Information Security Program and industry standard best practices to help ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all IT resources.

Serve as partial owner in managing disaster recovery documentation, procedures, and coordination in support of the University mission.

Monitor IT industry trends and technologies to keep current on existing and emerging solutions and services.

Other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: This position can accommodate a combination of remote and in-person work.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and at least four years’ experience in a technology support environment, preferably in higher education or a combination of education and experience from which a similar skillset would be obtained.

Must demonstrate a deep understanding of core systems in an enterprise, service-oriented environment.

Must have hands on experience or knowledge of all core technologies and services listed in the Essential and Related Functions section.

Must have a customer focused attitude and must demonstrate past success in deploying and managing core and network architectures in ways that meet customer needs in a timely, effective, and innovative manner.

Must have well-developed and demonstrated oral and written communication skills and the ability to use them creatively in leading university core systems development and implementation.
Salary: Pay Commensurate with Experience
