Job Description:
The Network Engineer provides high level technical expertise in the design, engineering, installation, monitoring and maintenance of the Washington and Lee University network. The Network Services group of Washington and Lee University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) team is responsible for the campus wired/wireless LAN, firewall architecture, internet connectivity, cloud peering fabrics and an enterprise-class data center network infrastructure.

This position is hybrid remote/in-office. The Washington and Lee University campus is located in Lexington, Virginia, an historic city of 7,000 residents, in the Shenandoah Valley. Lexington is a two-hour drive to Richmond and a 3-hour drive to Washington, DC. Charlottesville, Roanoke, and Harrisonburg are all within about an hour drive.

Essential Functions:

Responsible for the technical aspects of the design, implementation, management, and support of all wired/wireless networking systems that support the Students, Faculty and Staff of Washington and Lee University.

Expert knowledge of network fundamentals including network protocols, network security, network hardware/software, and network management tools.

Monitors all network systems for availability, error conditions, performance and otherwise ensures services are fully operational and secure.

Provide technical support, network maintenance and service restorations during scheduled hours and after-hours as required.

Assist with establishing network architectures, standards, and best practices for designing, implementing, and integrating current campus networks into the University's private/public cloud services (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS).

Stays current with advancements in networking technologies through on-the-job training and attending technical courses and/or conferences. Responsible for researching and documenting emerging technologies and industry trends to determine strategic fit.

Participate in representing the Network Infrastructure Services team in providing network engineering expertise to the University community with regards to evaluating services and technologies that use the network for communications.

Work collaboratively with other cross-functional teams within Information Technology Services and the across the University.

Assist with creating and maintaining appropriate network documentation, standards, and projects.

Follows the ITS Information Security Program and industry standard best practices to help ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all IT resources.

Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of study or a combination of work experience and education is required. Comprehensive knowledge of legacy and emerging voice technologies.

Must demonstrate a working knowledge of enterprise cable plant technologies.

Must be familiar with network hardware requirements to include power management and connectivity.

Must have excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Budget preparation and administration.

A customer-focused attitude and demonstrated past success in supporting network services that meet customer needs in a timely, effective, and innovative manner.

Must have well-developed and demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference with demonstrated technical experience in the following infrastructure areas:

Network switching and routing (Juniper/Junos Operating System preferred)

Wireless technology (Aruba preferred)

Firewall configuration and management (Fortinet preferred)

TCP/IP networking (IPv6 bonus)

BGP & OSPF routing

EVPN/VXLAN protocols

Network hardware and software

Phone systems (VoIP)

Outside/inside plant cabling

Data security policies and implementation

Internet connection, monitoring and configuration principles

Monitoring and optimization of networks

Detailed troubleshooting and problem resolution

New or renovated facility infrastructure design and installation
Work Schedule: This position can accommodate a hybrid work schedule with a combination of remote and in-person work. This position requires periodic after hours work for planned network maintenance activities as well as participation in an on-call rotation for network related emergencies.
Minimum Pay: $87,000 - Pay Commensurate with Experience
