The Research & Development (R&D) Engineer position is an integral addition to our Product Development team. The role has the primary objective to lead Cornerstone Building Brand's focus on innovation in solving the challenges facing the fenestration industry. This role will focus on creative ways to meet our ever-growing customer requirements from the building industry - with a primary concentration on material research and development, energy consumption and/or generation, and effects of the environmental conditions on products across the country. In addition, the R&D Engineer will seek to improve the quality and cost of existing products as well as the development of new products. The individual who accepts this role will have the opportunity to work directly with our Window and Door products as well as collaborate across all of Cornerstone Building Brands.
This role will focus on improving our customer experience through field research, supplier collaboration, new product engineering, product testing, engaging universities, and project management. The successful candidate will have opportunities for visibility at many levels in the organization and will work closely with the Product Management, Operations, Supply Chain, and Quality teams. Advancement opportunities are present throughout multiple departments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead the company in learning about new and emerging trends in fenestration industry
• Identify areas of opportunity to implement these new technologies into product solutions
• Investigate specific aspects of product performance where improvements are needed, or performance problems have been identified
• Recommend modifications of design, materials, or processes to improve performance
• Research, trial, and implement new materials and processes within our window systems and vinyl extrusion operations
• Participate on new product development efforts with a focus on innovative ways to solve challenges
• Lead the Product Engineering group in knowledge and training on advanced CAD methods such as Finite Element Analysis and Thermal simulations; also, be the lead towards driving the latest versions of key software and assisting with implementations
• Lead efforts to find new uses for and drive the development of injection molded parts to support overall design requirements
• Investigate and develop a knowledge base related to glass properties (including insulated glass unit properties) related to Sound Transmission, Thermal performance, and Structural or Impact performance -This will include but is not limited to vacuum glazing, heat mirror technology, laminated glass, and other film options; also including spacer systems and gas filling options
• Evaluate and implement improvements as needed in the appearance and/or weatherability of products
• Work with other Product Engineering group members to improve office and laboratory operations with regard to safety, housekeeping, efficiency, and quality of results
• Assists with new product designs, improvements to existing product lines, and competitor product analysis
• Responsible for determining product material specifications to maintain product integrity and consumer safety
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material and Science Engineering, or related science field, Master's Degree Preferred
• Minimum of seven years experience in in materials and product development, engineering, or other technical function working with product and/or manufacturing specifications
• Minimum of five years of fenestration and/or PVC extrusion experience
• Working knowledge of building codes, injection molding, glass, and aluminum
• Ability to manage engineering documentation and present technical information
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects using excellent project management skills
• Ability to communicate across multiple business functions and levels
• Knowledge of various CAD software and Smartsheet is a plus
• Flexibility for a mix of remote and onsite work schedules
• Position requires moderate travel (25%)

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $120K to 135K + 10% Bonus + medical, dental, vision benefits starting day 1 + 401k and PTO. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process. (Full-time is defined as regularly working 30+ hours per week.)
