Job Description
The WVTF/Radio IQ Director of Content and Distribution works collaboratively with all station departments to coordinate daily operational functions of the station ensuring an audience-centered, consistent, near-flawless execution of programming and operations elements that extends across platforms. This includes scheduling of programming, promotions, and special broadcasts across all dayparts, both stations and all audio-delivery platforms. The three main areas of concentration are: content; automation and traffic systems and on-air fundraising execution.
In collaboration with the News Director and General Manager the Director of Content and Distribution will make programming decisions such as overall schedule and use of specials and covering breaking news. They demonstrate solid news judgement and high journalistic ethics; very high attention to detail; the ability to take initiative and improve processes and to prioritize and meet multiple deadlines. Also responsible for responding to listener questions and concerns regarding programming from external providers.
Responsible for oversight of the automation and traffic systems (maintenance, programming, monitoring, and troubleshooting) ensuring they are functioning effectively and efficiently. Interacts regularly with the WVTF Radio IQ Engineering staff, and, as needed with Virginia Tech IT.
This position supervises all WVTF and Radio IQ Hosts, Operations Director, and Traffic Coordinator as well as all local production not already supervised by the News Director.
This position requires flexibility in the work schedule; evening and weekend hours may be necessary. In addition, this position may be called upon to address automation issues while out of the office and will maintain remote access to address those issues when they arise.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of relevant experience in radio programming, with a solid understanding of broadcast audience metrics and movement across daypart techniques.
Excellent communication skills; strong and creative writing and production skills for broadcast audiences.
Thorough knowledge of FCC rules and regulations, IRS, and other legal requirements for underwriting language and music licensing requirements.
Demonstrated proficiency with technology specifically radio broadcasting equipment and common software and digital audio products and processing.
Proven ability to consistently work well with others, always demonstrating respect for the diverse constituencies at WVTF, Virginia Tech, and our communities of service.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree or commensurate professional media management experience
Working knowledge of Wide Orbit, Content Depot, Hindenburg audio editing software, Neilsen Audio and other data or similar software and programs.
