Offering an exceptional leadership opportunity, Carilion Clinic (CC) and the Department of Surgery are searching for a Chief of the Western Region Section, in Christiansburg, Virginia, to lead a team of four general surgeons, two vascular surgeons, five urologists, and six advanced care practitioners in a clinic-based, academic program with remarkable opportunities. The Chief will direct the clinical, educational, and research activities for the Section. This position reports to Dr. Michael Nussbaum, SVP, Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Carilion Clinic.
Based in the Level-III 146-bed Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (CNRVMC), an award-winning 146-bed acute care facility offering modern medical ORs, state-of-the-art technology (advanced imaging and Da Vinci Xi robots) in Christiansburg, VA and Carilion Giles Community Hospital (CGCH) a 25-bed critical access facility in Pearisburg, VA.  Join 200+ physicians on the medical staffs representing a broad spectrum of both medical and surgical specialties. The primary and secondary service area of 750,000 is supported by numerous Carilion primary care practices throughout the region. The region is home to Lifeguard 11, one of Carilion Clinic’s emergency air medical transport helicopters which primarily serves the New River Valley and areas west. The practice has a strong reputation based on excellent quality and compassionate care for the people of the communities it serves. The practice includes an NAPBC certified breast program, robust general, colorectal, oncology, urologic, and vascular volume with support of additional subspecialists located close by at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital/Carilion Children’s Hospital, a Level-I 763-bed trauma and academic health center.

The Western Region faculty are actively involved in the education of medical students, residents, allied health science students, and Virginia Tech undergraduate and graduate students. CNRVMC currently provides general surgery residency rotation/support for a team of residents, with the opportunity to teach residents at all levels of training as well as medical students. There are also plans to develop a urology residency and a vascular surgery fellowship within the system.
We are looking for a dynamic, growth-focused surgical leader of excellent clinical experience, proven academic interest, and great vision and creativity. The successful candidate will combine patient care, teaching of medical students and residents, and faculty development in the setting of a dynamic, academic multi-specialty group practice providing comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care for adults and children. There are few positions in the country that can boast such wonderful potential. The position requires an academic appointment at VTCSOM.
Other requirements include:
• MD/DO, Board Certification/Eligibility in Surgery
• At least 5 years of progressive leadership in an academic setting with an academic rank of at least Associate Professor
• Evidence of strong organizational, communication and leadership skills
• Physician leadership experience with emphasis on team building; development of integrated collaborative models of care, education, and research; and managing people and programs.
• Experience with graduate medical education is preferred
