Description The City of Roanoke is seeking a Police Support Technician I to take select police reports in person and over the phone in the Services Division of the Police Department. Enters and maintains criminal processes in the Records Management System and the Virginia Criminal Information Network. Performs a variety of difficult administrative tasks that require interpretation, independent judgement and the determination of appropriate courses of action. Prioritizes large volumes of work. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); related experience and/or training working in a clerical environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Bilingual, Spanish/English speakers encouraged to apply. Shift work including weekends and holidays.

This is a non-exempt position. Examples of Duties SUMMARY
Performs technical and administrative work in support of sworn Police Officers involving computerized data systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Performs general customer service functions; answers telephones; greets/assists customers and visitors; communicates with the general public, attorneys, court personnel, and City officials; provide assistance, requested documents and information regarding department services and procedures, refer callers to other staff members as appropriate; and takes messages.
Receives criminal complaints by phone or in-person and writes detailed police reports for permanent records pursuant to the Uniform Crime Reporting Manual and National Incident-Based Reporting System.
Operates the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Criminal Information Network (NCIC) to include entering, clearing, modifying, or canceling records. Sends and receives VCIN administrative messages. Queries criminal history records. Queries DMV transcripts.
Enters, modifies, and verifies all incoming criminal warrants, capias, protective orders, etc. from City Courts, Magistrate, Virginia Probation and Parole, and surrounding jurisdiction into the Records Management System.
Logs and stores property into the property room using an Evidence Management system; escorts officers to property room and ensures drugs, money, and other miscellaneous property is properly inventoried and submitted to the correct location.
Researches call histories using Computer Aided Dispatch to provide information to departmental personnel.
Processes Freedom of Information Requests in accordance with establish policies and procedures.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); related experience and/or training working in a clerical environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Supplemental Information LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
