Job Description
The Core Business Manager and Cost Accountant will be responsible for business operations and financial management of Virginia Tech Health Sciences and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute core facilities and service centers with an understanding of university, state, and federal guidelines. The role will report to the Director of Finance and in this capacity will be a key contributor in producing high-quality and high-accuracy financial activity reporting for dissemination to all areas of the organization, the university, equipment sponsors and potential partners. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to the financial viability of the institute through effective core management. This position will be responsible for the operations management aspects of core facilities (service centers) including an in-depth understanding of the iLabs software platform used to manage institute cores. The position will include providing accurate usage rate data for inclusion in sponsored research budgets produced by a highly dynamic and diverse PI population and grants administration team. The cost accounting aspects of this position will include management of NIH salary cap cost share, pre-reviewer role in the university’s effort reporting system (ERS), fixed assets surplus procedures and contributions to the universities periodic space survey.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related area or equivalent experience.
- Experience analyzing accounts and creating reports
- Experience with budget management development and analysis
- Demonstrated excel competencies.
- Excellent analytical and quantitative skills with experience utilizing computer applications for data analysis and report development.
- Must have a high level of independent judgment, initiative, discretion, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or relevant professional certification.
- Experience with service centers and/or core facilities.
- Experience with core facility management software or similar experience in managing inventory, billing and operational expenditures of a cost-recovery service center.
