Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is a Level I trauma center, tertiary/quaternary care facility, and Certified Primary Stroke Center with ~95,000 patients visits annually and over 2,000 trauma activations. It is currently licensed for 72 beds and has a dedicated Pediatric ED, Observation Unit, and Transitional Care Unit, along with 2 trauma bays. There is planned expansion to 120 beds and will have a dedicated 12 bed critical care pod, 40 bed observation unit, 5 trauma bays, and other dedicated treatment areas. Carilion Clinic is also affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and has numerous post-graduate training programs, including multiple medical and surgical residencies and fellowships.
The Emergency Medicine Clinical Specialist provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to adult and pediatric patients in a variety of acuity levels to assure safe and effective drug therapy. The Emergency Medicine Clinical Specialist will develop and maintain a clinical practice by participating in bedside rounds and responding to trauma and medical emergencies.
This daytime EM specialist position will work a modified 7 on/7 off schedule, alternating with a specialist counterpart. Activities include collaborating with members of the Emergency Department to develop policies and protocols that provide effective and efficient use of medications, providing consultation for other health care providers, educating patients and other health care providers, and reviewing and processing medication orders. This position would also include relevant committee representation, staff education, and precepting pharmacy students. This position would be directly involved in precepting PGY1 pharmacy residents and PGY2 pharmacy residents in critical care, infectious diseases, and internal medicine.
Qualified candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and must possess a current Virginia pharmacist license or be eligible for licensure. An ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is required and specialized PGY2 residency training in Emergency Medicine or Critical Care is preferred. Applicants must possess good leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision. Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills are required.
What We Require:
Education: Must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
Experience: ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency required for all new hires or transfers as of August 1, 2011. Specialized residency training in respective patient care area is preferred.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: License to practice Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia required within 90 days of hire. During the first 90 days of employment and the licensure application process, pharmacists without a valid license to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia may not perform duties restricted to a licensed pharmacist until the license is obtained. If the license is not obtained within 90 days of employment, the employee may be subject to separation from Carilion Clinic.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Must possess good leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision. Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills. Work requires knowledge of general office equipment and procedures including computer and keyboarding skills. All pharmacists must complete an Orientation Competency
