General Definition of Work Performs administrative support work providing assistance to library patrons, providing detailed circulation services, providing technology support, promoting services and programs, maintaining records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Library Director.
Essential Functions • Performs detailed customer service, library database, and integrated library system tasks including checking out and in of library materials; researches subjects, titles, and authors for patrons; communicates with and guides library patrons to locate and retrieve library materials (both in-library and online).
• Creates, maintains, and troubleshoots library user accounts; accepts payment for fines, interlibrary loans, supplies, faxes, and copies/prints.
• Maintains knowledge of and promotes library programs, collections, technologies, and services to users both internal and external.
• Assists with technology and other programming as necessary.
• Assists in the collection and recording of library statistics.
• Assists with or helps supervise library programs or activities as assigned.
• All duties as assigned.

Special Requirements Must possess and maintain valid VA driver's license.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED with coursework in library sciences, or related field and minimal experience in a library and/or customer service, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
General knowledge of basic library procedures, methods, and techniques; general knowledge of the library circulation functions; general knowledge of office procedures and records maintenance techniques; general knowledge of and interest in books including reader interest levels; skill in the use of library equipment, materials, and resources; ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; ability to operate standard office and computer equipment and perform basic word processing and data entry; ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons, associates, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).
