Description The City of Roanoke is seeking a Family Services Supervisor within the Foster Care division to supervise a staff of Family Services Specialists engaged in general and child welfare casework. The successful applicant will review requests for services, assigns work to family services specialist and monitors service delivery to clients, and review preliminary/investigative reports and makes regular periodic review of cases to insure appropriate practices and effective follow-up. They will usually supervise 5-10 employees and carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Bachelor's degree from four year college or university with a degree in human services or related field, BSW/MSW preferred, and at least three years related experience in human services. Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Examples of Duties SUMMARY
Supervises a staff of family services specialists engaged in general and child welfare case work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Reviews requests for services, assigns work to family services specialist and monitors service delivery to clients in crisis and often life threatening situations
• Reviews preliminary/investigative reports and makes regular, periodic review of cases to insure appropriate practices and effective follow-up
• Participates in initial interviews for hiring, promotions, disciplinary action and termination
• Gathers pertinent information and evaluates criteria in making recommendations regarding service delivery and utilization of resources
• Prepares reports and presentations regarding program activities and service needs
• Attends community and state meetings as a representative of the department to explain programs, services and regulations
• Participates in staff conferences to determine service needs, eligibility and resource utilization in complex cases
• Provides appropriate program specific training and professional development activities to  family services specialists
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES • Supervises 5-10 employees in assigned unit.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree from four year college or university with a degree in human services or related field, BSW/MSW preferred, and at least three years related experience in human services. Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Supplemental Information LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as laws, policies, regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries orally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
***CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS***
Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you do not have a Drivers License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, you must submit a certified copy of your driving record issued by the DMV from your previous state of residence with your application.
