Description The City of Roanoke's Police Department is seeking a Training and Recruiting Coordinator to coordinate and conduct programs to recruit police officer applicants.  The Training & Recruiting Coordinator is expected to assist with police applicant background investigations on a regular basis.  The Training & Recruiting Coordinator will attend and travel to recruitment trips throughout the region.  This position is a civilian position within the Roanoke City Police Department and candidates will be subject to a full police background investigation and supervised by the Training Lieutenant.

This is an exempt position.
Examples of Duties The Training & Recruiting Coordinator works primarily in an environmentally controlled office in the Academy facility from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The Training & Recruiting Coordinator is expected to adjust working hours to accommodate recruiting programs scheduled during evening or weekend hours.   Occasional overnight out-of-town trips are necessary.  The Training & Recruiting Coordinator spends approximately half of the average workday out of the office conducting recruiting efforts.
Training Activities
• Maintains employee training records and databases
• Data entry to track training and certifications
• Schedule and facilitate weekly Basic Law Enforcement testing
• Prepares, facilitates, monitors, evaluates and documents training activities
• Assesses and facilitates training needs for new and existing employees
• Develops training aids such as manuals and handbooks
• Tracks and reports training outcomes
Recruiting Activities
• Maintains liaison with the City's Department of Human Resources concerning the planning and coordination of recruitment trips and activities
• Develops and maintains contacts throughout the Valley and region to promote police recruiting.  Those contacts include, but are not limited to:  educational institutions, military bases and facilities, religious institutions, job placement programs, community organizations and other law enforcement agencies and personnel
• Individually contacts potential and actual police applicants
• Assists applicants with the entire application process
• Participates in recruitment trips, job fairs and similar events
• Distributes police recruiting information for employment
• Develops recruiting information and programs
• Maintains knowledge of recruiting efforts and benefits of the Department
• Maintains knowledge of all appropriate EEO and Affirmative Action guidelines and acts in accordance with those guidelines
• Maintains awareness of Department and City policies and activities to be able to respond to a variety of questions about the Department and the City
• Develops and maintains files related to recruiting efforts and applicants
• Develops reports on recruiting activities
• Responds to inquiries about the Department
• Facilitates the scheduling of other officers to participate in recruitment programs
Other Activities
• Conducts training programs related to recruiting
• Maintains an understanding of current applicable CALEA standards
• Maintains a professional image to positively reflect the Department to applicants and potential applicants
• Performs other public appearance duties as requested by the Training Lieutenant, the Services Division Captain or Deputy Chief
• Performs other tasks as assigned by the Chief of Police, Division Deputy Chiefs, Training Lieutenant or designee
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, three to five years related experience and/or training in recruitment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with groups of customers or employees of organization. Fluency in Spanish is beneficial.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
