GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Under the routine supervision of the Water Distribution Crew Leader, operates and maintains backhoe, ditching and loader equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains, services and meter settings. Requires some judgment in applying well-established procedures and methods, such as operating complex machinery and equipment and performing routine equipment maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Excavates and back fills ditches and holes for water service installation, maintenance and repair by operating heavy equipment including backhoes, ditchers and loaders.
• Grades and levels job sites upon completion of service work.
• Loads and unloads dirt, sand, gravel and rock.
• Performs routine maintenance on heavy equipment ensuring that machinery is maintained according to operations manuals and/or OMU procedure.
• Assists water distribution crews installing and repairing water services as needed.
• Assists electrical crews when necessary for debris management.
• Operates directional boring machine, forklift in assisting warehouse personnel loading and unloading parts, as well as dump truck as needed.
• Operates ram hammer, trencher, and drilling machine.
• Builds concrete meter vaults.
• Collects water samples and chlorine levels.
• Substitutes for Crew Leader during absence as required.
• Issues boil water advisories.
• Adhere to all governmental safety codes and company standards. Completes all training in a timely manner.
• This role requires a thirty minute response time.
• Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area; e.g. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc, plus 2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Ability to utilize common sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral or diagrammed instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Knowledge and Abilities
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Basic knowledge of water distribution mechanics. Strong heavy equipment operational skills and a thorough knowledge of all related traffic and safety issues. Must be familiar with all types of heavy equipment including backhoe, crawler tractor, ditching equipment, crane, etc. Valid driver's license also needed. First-Aid/CPR certification required. Must maintain competent person certification. Knowledge of cutting, welding, sweating pipes. Respirator release required. State Certification in Class IV Water Distribution desired.
Experience
One to two years heavy equipment operation and maintenance experience.
