Responsibilities Respiratory therapists treat people who are suffering from heart and lung problems.The patients primarily consist of lung cancer patients, premature infants, and victims of heart attack or stroke. RTs are specialized in cardiac and pulmonary care, and work under the guidance of a physician in all units within a hospital. They spend most of their time in the ICU, Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, ER, and sleep and pulmonary labs within hospitals, or in patients’ homes if employed by a home health agency. The respiratory therapist diagnoses ailments associated with breathing and cardiac problems. They perform many diagnostic and analytic procedures such as evaluating lung capacity, performing chest physiotherapy, monitoring cardiopulmonary systems, checking patients’ tissue specimens, and conducting pulmonary function tests. A primary and vital task of respiratory therapists is the management of ventilators and artificial breathing devices for those who have breathing problems.
Qualifications
• Valid BLS from the American Heart Association
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications from the American Heart Association are recommended and may be required for specific registered nurses and travel nurse positions
• Other specialty-related certifications may be required for specific allied healthcare positions
• Proof of right to work in the United States
• Experience as a RT in a hospital setting
Experience Requirements 12 months of occupational experience
