General Description Supports the mission of the library by providing access to resources, services, information, and assistance with library resources. Work supports the Youth Services department and is performed primarily at the children’s room service desk under the general direction of the Youth Services Librarian.
Hours:
Monday - Off
Tuesday - 9:30-4:30
Wednesday - 9:30-4:30
Thursday - 11:00-8:00
Friday - 9:00-5:00
Saturday - 8:00-5:00
Fridays and Saturdays alternate.  27-28 hours per week.
***Position is open until filled.  Interviews will be conducted as applications are received.*** Essential Functions of the Job / Knowledge, Skills and Abilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
• Provides excellent customer service to users while applying library policies and procedures and monitoring use of materials and equipment.
• Performs children’s desk duties, including placing hold and interlibrary loan requests, assisting patrons in locating materials, and assisting patrons with public computers.
• Answers complex circulation, reference, and readers advisory questions. Refers questions to the Youth Services Librarian as needed.
• Assists the Youth Services Librarian in the preparation of active and passive program materials, the Summer Reading Program and special projects as needed.
• Delivers programs in the absence of the Youth Services Librarian, including, but not limited to, story time.
• Assists the Youth Services Librarian with the maintenance of the youth services collection.
• Prepares bulletin boards and other displays.
• Enters and checks detailed data.
• Contributes to program publicity by proofreading flyers and posters.
• Assists in maintaining neat and clean library facilities.
• Position will require working some regularly scheduled Saturdays and evenings.
The aforementioned functions are normal for this position.  They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Provide excellent customer service and welcoming, positive customer experiences. Display tact and courtesy when communicating with all members of the public.
• Enthusiasm for working with children and young adults and knowledge of the subjects, characters, and pop culture in which they might be interested.
• Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and authors.
• Use current technology and applications commonly used by library customers or in an office setting.
• Perform complex data entry and filing duties with accuracy and speed.
• Explain processes and procedures.
• Perform basic mathematic operations and use a cash register.
• Follow verbal and written directions.
• Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
• Work independently and as a member of a team in an efficient and cooperative manner.
• Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to learn.
Education and Experience Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree. Applicants must be computer literate and familiar with standard office computer applications such as Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and internet browsers. Acquaintance with libraries and library classification systems (Dewey or Library of Congress) is required. Prior experience working with children and/or young adults is preferred.
Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately quiet location.
