Level II Special Care Nursery Fellowship at Cincinnati Children's
Are you a pediatrician or soon-to-be graduating pediatric resident interested in a career providing care to moderately preterm or ill infants born in hospitals with Level II Special Care Nurseries (SCN)? If so, Cincinnati Children’s Level II Fellowship Program may be for you!
What is Cincinnati Children’s Level II Special Care Nursery Fellowship and why was it created?
Many pediatricians complete their pediatric residency program with as little as two months of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Experience. With little NICU experience during pediatric residency, many graduates are not prepared to independently practice in a Level II SCN upon graduation without further training. In recognition of this training gap, we created a novel Level II Special Care Nursery Fellowship Program.  This is a non-ACGME accredited fellowship program but administered through the GME office at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
The Fellowship Program’s aim is to graduate pediatric physicians proficient in providing independent Level II SCN care. Fellowship training is based on a 12-month curriculum, that can be adapted to a 9–18-month curriculum based on trainees’ prior experiences and skills. On a monthly basis, trainees spend 1 week each in the following clinical areas:
• Level I nursery rotations : Independently caring for newborns in the well-baby nursery. Trainees gain expertise in identifying and treating common newborn conditions.
• Level II SCN rotations : An immersive but supervised Level II SCN experience. Trainees attend high-risk deliveries, participate in neonatal resuscitations, and follow admissions longitudinally, providing care under the direct supervision of a Level II provider. Emphasis is placed on procedural skills and prenatal consults.
• Level III NICU rotations : An immersive experience in Level III NICU care under the supervision of a board-certified neonatologist. Focus is placed on attending high-risk preterm deliveries, initial stabilization and care of infants born <32 weeks gestation, and exposure to neonatal procedures.
Supplemental Learning : Core clinical rotations are supplemented with self-directed learning, didactics, and simulation-based training
