Summary: The Recreation Leader is responsible for the overall promotion, organization, and leadership of recreation programs.
Roles & Responsibilities:
* Leads or assists with group activities under the supervision of the Director
* Provides and plans activities for each individual to include music, sensory stimulation, touch and tactile therapy, reminiscent and cognitive therapy, spiritual activities, arts, crafts, games, exercises, horticulture, pet therapy, and field trips.
* Provides activities for residents’ interest (past and present), physical, mental, and psychosocial needs.
* Leads one-on-one activity sessions with residents who are unable to attend groups due to physical/mental capabilities or who refuse activities.
* Matches innovative recreation with individual needs and motivates participation in activities.
* Maintains good attendance and arrives/departs work at the scheduled time
* Position requires working one weekend a month as the schedule allows and an occasional evening/holidays. Normal hours will be 8:30 am to 5 pm.
* Supervises volunteers as needed or as deemed necessary by the Activities Director.
* Arranges and sets up designated rooms and areas for scheduled activities.
* Receives, stores, issues and cleans specified equipment for scheduled activities, keeping within guidelines with infection control policies.
* Works well with volunteers, family, co-workers, and outside community.
* Attends in-services required by Activities Director and Friendship Retirement Administration.
Essential Functions:
* Work with Director as well as residents to determine suitable activities to engage residents
* Flexibility to tailor activities to match resident interests and abilities
* Engage with residents and other staff members to ensure all recreation activities are meeting the needs of the resident and their care plan
Qualifications:
* This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching all day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds
* Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language
* Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public
* Be able to follow written and oral instructions
Education & Experience:
* High School Diploma or GED required
* Experience in a long-term care/rehabilitation facility preferred
Working Conditions:
* Works in office areas as well as throughout the facility and its premises.
* Moves intermittently during working hours.
* Is subject to frequent interruptions.
* Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.
* Is subject to callback during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.)
* Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
* Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the work day, as well as reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants.
* Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc, including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
* Communicates with the nursing personnel and other department personnel.
* Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
* Is involved with residents, family members, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions/circumstances.
* May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
