Description The City of Roanoke is seeking a Victim/Witness Assistant to perform responsible professional work addressing needs of victims and witnesses involving appearance in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, General District and Circuit Court as needed; does work related to this court as required. General knowledge of individual and group behavior. Some knowledge of social institutions, community and government service. General knowledge of court process; ability to identify and address problems associated with court appearances and court practices.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  Ability to establish effective working relationships with others. Ability to prepare and maintain records. Work 40 hours per week, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., 52 weeks a year, city benefits. Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with a degree in social science or related field; experience in public contact.

This is a non-exempt position. Examples of Duties SUMMARY
To reduce the trauma of victimization and encourage crime victims to cooperate with and participate in the criminal justice system by providing direct services including information and assistance required by the Crime Victim and Witness Rights Act.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Prepares victims for participation in trial proceedings through counseling, courtroom tours, accompaniment to court and explanation of the proceedings
Provides counseling and referrals to appropriate agencies for victims and witnesses
Provides information to victims and witnesses on significant developments in the investigation and adjudication of case
Assists victims with administrative procedures in any phase of their relationship with the court
Assists with training for program orientation to police, social service agencies, and general public
Prepares reports, produces and distributes written materials and maintains records
Assists in performing administrative and program management activities including recruiting, training, and monitoring volunteer staff and student interns
Will occasionally perform additional duties in absence of Program Coordinator
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Limited supervision of program interns and volunteers.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with a degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology or related field; six months to one year related experience and/or training in direct delivery of human services; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Supplemental Information LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid appropriate drivers permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
