Description The City of Roanoke is seeking a Deputy Court Clerk I to perform clerical work in the Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court. Issues marriage licenses, subpoenas, and notary public applications; administer oaths; and process civil suits. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to inputting all data relating to documents filed in case files into automated indexing system, recording and recording, assumed names certificates and military discharge paperwork; preparing a variety of simple and routine reports; scanning and indexes deeds, wills, and other documents; attending court sessions; swearing witnesses in; tagging exhibits; recording and transcribing proceedings; and typing abstracts of convictions for the Division of Motor Vehicles. This position requires a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); two or more years related experience and/or training in a clerical environment, preferably in the legal field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates degree preferred.

Examples of Duties SUMMARY
Performs clerical work in the Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Assists the public, legal professionals and other government agencies with their requests and questions both in person and by phone
Issues marriage licenses, subpoenas, and notary public applications
Administers oaths
Processes civil suits
Inputs case file data into automated indexing and retrieval system
Records land records, assumed names certificates and military discharge papers
Provides copies of divorce decrees, wills, land records, marriages, court orders upon request
Generates various reports
Indexes and scans documents
Records and releases civil and criminal judgments
Attends court sessions, swears witnesses, tags exhibits and records and transcribes proceedings
Collects fines
Types abstracts of convictions for the Division of Motor Vehicles.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); two or more years related experience and/or training in a clerical environment, preferably in the legal field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates degree preferred.
Supplemental Information LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
