The Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is finding loving forever homes for homeless cats and dogs, using spay/ neuter programs to reduce the number of unwanted pets, and reuniting lost/found animals with their owners. Our core values are to show compassion, encourage teamwork, exhibit honesty and integrity, and strive for continuous improvement. In 2022, 836 cats and dogs were adopted. Our in-house veterinarians performed 1,151 spays and neuters last year. Over 400 animals were fed through our Food Share Program. We were able to reunite over 200 pets with their families.
Position Summary:
The Shelter Veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to shelter animals, including spay/neuter surgery and treatment of various medical conditions. The Shelter Veterinarian also assists in developing, advancing, and implementing shelter medicine protocols and delivers and ensures humane medical treatment of all animals seen in the shelter. This is done while fostering an environment of inclusion and accountability. These responsibilities are expected to be completed through respectful, professional, and timely conduct and communication.
Status:
This is a full-time, hourly position which will include some weekends.

Job Title: Shelter Veterinarian

■ Provides guidance to staff for situations requiring immediate medical problem solving
■ Communicates directly with management team with regard to care of all shelter animals
❖ Operations
➢ Coordinates and directs shelter medical operations and ensures sound veterinary medical practices.
■ Leads the evaluation and establishment of shelter medical protocols
■ Continually improves the medical management program and ensures high-quality medical care and services for shelter guests including those temporarily in foster care, focusing on identification, treatment and prevention of health problems thereby increasing adoptions and decreasing adoption returns
■ Makes recommendations and collaborates with the Executive Director, and Animal Care Manager in the formulation of shelter medical objectives, practices, plans and decisions that influence operations to ensure optimal health of sheltered animals
■ Oversees the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA requirements
■ Actively participates as a member of the management team; attends applicable meetings
➢ Performs the duties of a staff veterinarian, including but not limited to:
■ Evaluates and determines the disposition of incoming animals, this will be a continual reassessment during the animals stay at BENCHS
■ Provides medical services to shelter animals, including physical examinations, diagnostics, medical rounds, and treatments
■ Performs sterilization surgeries and other surgical procedures for shelter animals
■ Ensures appropriate medication is administered by shelter staff as directed
■ Advises, performs or oversees euthanasia performed within the shelter
■ Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses.
