Position Summary:
Sovah Martinsville is seeking a full-time Phlebotomist to collect and process blood specimens for testing in the laboratory.
• Verifies patient and specimen identification before performing any procedure according to standard procedure.
• Confers with patients to obtain the information needed for laboratory records, explain the procedure, allay fears and elicit cooperation.
• Labels, processes and delivers specimens for testing.
• Perform bleeding time following the procedure and using the appropriate equipment.
• Performs waived glucose meter testing as part of the glucose tolerance procedure.
• Collects blood specimens using age-appropriate techniques.
• Collects drug screens according to the chain of custody guidelines and procedures set in the Drug Screen Collection Manuals.
• Distributes samples to appropriate laboratory sections within designated turn-around times.
• Processes incoming requisitions and samples according to specimen processing protocols.
• Centrifuge and store blood samples for subsequent testing.
• Allocate the appropriate amount of specimen to the appropriate tubes for the different tests and panels.
• Maintains equipment and medical supplies.
• Receives requests, both written and verbal, from physicians for laboratory tests. When verbal request, follow the protocol for obtaining the written documentation for the verbal request.
• Verifies samples collected by non-laboratory personnel are properly collected, labeled and matched with the appropriate request or barcode labels for appropriate testing.
• Enters patient demographics and orders into LCS.
• Investigates and verifies unusual orders with the units, physicians, and/or reference lab.
• Query, print, fax, mail, and/or chart any reports to the appropriate person/unit/office that requires manual reporting.
• Completes and documents scheduled and unscheduled computer maintenance to include changing ribbons and labels, resetting terminals, downing terminals, logging in and out of system and cleaning workstations.
• Trains students or new employees as directed by the support services supervisor.
• Assists with coordinating and conducting blood drives, including interviewing and screening donors.
• Utilizes the laboratory and hospital QA/PI plans to continually improve processes and designs.
Minimum Education:
• High school diploma or equivalent and a phlebotomy course or prior phlebotomy training.
Required Skills:
• Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
• National phlebotomy certification such as, ASPT, ASCP; preferred at hire or within first 6 months of hire.
• Typical Physical Demands: May require extended periods of standing or sitting. Some bending, stooping, or stretching is required. May require lifting and carrying 5-25 pounds.
• Requires full range of motion including eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
• Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal ranges.
• Requires ability to communicate and interact with others in person and on the phone. Also requires high degree of mental alertness and the ability to handle a high degree of stress and/or irregular work hours.
Minimum Work Experience:
• 100 successful venous collections; 1 year experience preferred.
